Cannes 09: MACABRE

Yet another film hotly anticipated here at Twitch HQ is The Mo Brothers' Macabre, the feature film follow up and expansion of their stunning previous short film Dara. Macabre is touted as the film most likely to inject a good shot of adrenaline into the Indonesian horror biz - an industry that turns out stacks of ultra-low budget horror every year with very, very few titles of any interest to international fans whatsoever - when it arrives on screens there later this year. With some of the international sales rights freshly scooped up by French sales outfit Overlook Entertainment - the same people who are behind The Pack - I had the chance to finally get a look at the promo reel for the picture today. And, once again, I stand by my earlier statements that Macabre will play like an equal blend of Audition and Saw, the Brothers succeeding wholeheartedly in their stated goal of fusing western and eastern horror styles. Beautifully shot, very violent and very, very bloody this is having trouble clearing Indonesian censors but we've been promised the public trailer soon.

Macabre tells the tale of the most horrifying night for 6 friends. Two newly weds Adjie and Astrid, along with 3 of their best friends decided to have an interstate road trip as a last attempt to reconcile Adjie with his estranged little sister Ladya.

Their drive is however being cut abruptly when they run into Maya, a strange out of nowhere girl who wanders aimlessly into their path. "I've been robbed" is all she has to say, the friends unanimously decided to give her a ride to her isolated house by the end of the woods.

Maya introduces Adjie and friends to her courteous blue-blooded mother; Dara, a woman of ageless enigma, and few spoken words. Dara insisted that their Samaritan act should be repaid with a feastly dinner.

This is where the night turns into a crimson-hell for the 6 friends; finding themselves trapped and hunted by Dara and her cult-like family of three deadly protégés, born and raised to systematically eliminate unsuspecting passerby for one nefarious reason.

One by one slaughtered, everybody will bleed, the darkest of night never looked so red.
