I don't know about you but personaly I've been waiting to make the switch to Blu-Ray until a player arrived on the scene capable of playing Blu-Ray discs from around the entire globe. Not that I have anything against US discs, but it's a big world out there, you know? And I want to be able to watch things from around the entire globe and not just my own back yard. Well, that player has arrived. It's the Momitsu BDP-899, and it can play anything. Any DVD from anywhere in the world, any Blu-Ray disc from anywhere in the world. Just punch the appropriate region code into the remote to set the player and off you go. To my knowledge this is the only true region free deck in the world right now and it's surprisingly well priced. I'm going shopping.

What about BRD drives in computers? Do those become region-locked, similar to DVD drives (though there are ways around that)?
Bah, I smell another mini-disc era.
Apple (surprisingly) don't want it and people can't afford another format change.
A pc and .Avi's can bring the same level of entertainment to the table as Dvd or Blu-ray.
I don't buy into this high definition jazz either.
Every six months there's another revolution in technology that we're all coaxed into buying.
It's consumerism at its most desperate.
The good thing about this Momitsu player is that it not only plays Blu-Rays from other regions but it also plays DVDs from all regions as well. I'm saving my pennies for this thing.
That is totally what I've been looking for. (And it even has a USB input, what is one of the features I love about my current player.) I'll have to check this one out when I finally get around to replacing my current TV.
If I am not mistaken North America and Japan are in the same region now on Blu-Ray no?
For me personally, all the Chinese films I get are usually region free bootleg. That just leaves the R2 UK stuff I guess...
European countries are producing more and more Blu Ray discs and there are plenty of discs from the US and Japan that I can't get because of the region problem. Now if only they would include english subs on all their discs then this would be heaven.
I'm still not jumping into BR, but when i do i certainly want a free player for that. Considering my love for asian films i'm not going to sit here waiting for lazy american studios to release films they have locked for like 10 years now. Fuck them.
Got myself a multi region BD player (Panasonic DMP-BD80) last month and I don't regret a single € spent on that machine.
It's just great to know that you can order your titles from around the world without having to wait for a confirmation if it will work on your player.
Awesome, been waiting for one (that doesn't need soldering!) I hope Pixmania or some other European outfit picks it up.
Since my BD Player is my PS3, there isn't very much I can do to circumvent region codes. And no, I'm not buying another BD player, but if I were, I would never buy one with region locks. DVD and BD region codes are nothing more than obscene price-fixing scams to plump the already fat wallets of some film studios.
I actually have this player and aside from one disc I had trouble with, it has been a dream. One of the best players I have ever got. You won't regret it
So when do they get sub-$100? That is about the time I jump into the pool. My local computer retailer is selling OEM Blue Ray drives for $135 (pioneer), so we are getting damn close. I use a PC to drive my projection system, and region unlocking is usually done with a piece of software running in the background, it is 99% effective, with only the occasional Japanese disc being a problem.
PC BluRay-players are already far under $100 and have been for months.
Incidentally, my father-in-law does not believe in the future of the format (Yes, we argue...) but accidentally got one when he bought a new Sony VAIO laptop!
:cheese:
(And of course, I meant region-free Blu-ray player.)
Have had this player for a few months now.... its really not bad at all. Haven't had any problems and i've been able to watch region B blu-ray's such as Brotherhood of the Wolf, Leon, Dances with wolves... its pretty cool.. alot of us were having trouble with our DIE HARD 2 blu-ray audio when it came to the lossless audio track, but this player didn't have a problem!!!!! nice product even if it is one of the first of its kind at the moment. gotta vouch for it because it provides top PQ and AQ when it comes to your blu-ray.. also it will play your dvd's no problem as well. later peeps!!!
J :-P
That website scammed me. Pisses me off.
