Variety Speculates On Cannes 2009 ...

by Todd Brown, April 16, 2009 11:44 PM

Though the official lineup announcement doesn't come until next week and the only films publicly confirmed thus far are Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Pixar's Up, Variety has gone out and listed a huge stack of films that their sources tell them are in for the 2009 edition of the Cannes Festival. Among them? Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock, Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell, Terry Gilliam's Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Bong Joon Ho's Mother, Johnnie To's Vengeance, Lars Von Trier's Antichrist, Park Chan Wook's Thirst, Wener Herzog's Bad Lieutenant and more, more, more. The sad thing? Though I'll be there attending the market the main festival screenings are all invitation and black tie only, which means I won't see a single damn one of these. Sigh.

Dude that sucks Todd... How hard is it to get a black tie??

Oh yeah, boo-hoo. You get to go to France and freaking Cannes but you'll miss a few movies that are big enough they'll show around the world and at the very least, be available on DVD a few months from them.

I think I know about a thousand people who'd trade places with you on that one in a second. You're a lucky dude. count your blessings sometimes.

Hymph. No Nymph.

I'm looking forward to NYMPH more than half of those movies.

Someone buy Todd a suit, please.

It's not the suit so much as it is the invites ... Cannes is a bizarre experience. Every day you have people in evening gowns and tuxedos standing around outside the main theater basically panhandling for tickets. Best dressed beggars in the world ...

And Nymph will most likely be in one of the sidebars. The Fortnight guys love Pen-Ek.

Fucking politics.

Heh. Just pictured Todd panhandling in a tux, sideburns and all..

That's a pretty good list. At least, a very hopeful one.
