So, Newsmakers - the Russian remake of Johnnie To's Breaking News - is all set to take a bow at Tribeca so how better to celebrate (?) than by announcing a pair of pending English language spins on To's films? There have been rumblings of an upcoming English remake of To's Mad Detective for a good while now and that news just became official with Variety breaking the news that producer Arthur Sarkissian is behind a push to remake both Mad Detective and earlier To title The Mission. With the right director these could both be very strong but is Sarkissian the guy to get that director? The man was a producer on Rush Hour so you know a whole lot of Asian fanboys are very nervous right now, waiting to see if Brett Ratner tries to work his way in to the projects ...

Little predictions:
Mad Detective
Director: Rob Cohen
Ching Wan Lau role: Nicholas Cage(acting 'mad' like in the Wicker Man)
Andy On role: Justin Timberlake(to draw in teenage girls)
The Mission
Director: Paul Anderson
Anthony Wong role: 50 Cent
Suet Lam role: Jack Black(actually, I'd kinda want to see that)
Simon Yam role: Paul Walker
I'm just kidding, btw.
After I watched Mad Detective, I thought it would make a really fantastic US TV series. There are so many cool crime shows on TV right now that focus on quirky characters that it would fit right in.
I wouldn't be against someone like, say, Tony Scott directing The Mission remake!
If this leads to a real DVD/Blu-Ray for THE MISSION then I can't say that nothing good will come of this. But that will never happen so screw this bullcrap.
I've always seen maybe Tarantino spinning his version of the Mission back when he was in his crime film phase. I don't know if anybody can predict it but will he ever do another in that genre?
why remake a prefect thing.....well, my 2cents:
- michael mann for the mission
- george clooney for mad detective (lol)
Remakes = Garbage.
God forbid producers and filmmakers have some shame... or even some originality...
"I’m just kidding, btw."
The thing is, that line up you mentioned would be very possible.
Even if it were in English MAD DETECTIVE would still be too weird and too dark to have more than limited arthouse appeal. The original film with its subtitled Cantonese dialogue and foreign actors already had limited arthouse appeal so what exactly is the point of this remake? Its not like they can turn this into a $100 million box office smash unless they get rid of the weirdness, the downbeat aspects and turn it into a wacky comedy. Eh, maybe that's what they want to do.
whatever, they won't get my money
my wish is for all non-Hollwood filmmakers should make a pact to not make any more films until Hollywood is forced to produce something original again.
as much as the drought'd hurt.
Typical Hollywood, steal perfectly good films and "remake" and repackage them for the American masses...sigh
I was actually excited when I saw Johnnie To on the headlines of this article and then this.....
I nearly vom... Never mind.
Just, please... Somebody make it possible to buy a dvd of The Mission that doesn't have a watermark the size of the Titanic spread across 80% of the frame. How in hell can Mei-Ah do something so braindead?!
My Predictions:
Mad Detective Remake?
Director: Quentin tarantino
Sean Lau's role: Johnny Depp ( i think he'll do just great on this role)
Andy On's role: maybe Shia Lebouf or chris evans
Sean lau's wife: still Kelly lin. she's hot.
