Is Cronos getting the Criterion treatment?

by Ard Vijn, April 1, 2009 6:18 AM

Like many DVD collectors I subscribe to the Criterion email newsletter. I don't subscribe to much but this one just sort-of happened, and I make it a point to actually read the thing. For who doesn't harbor a secret wish for a favorite movie to be picked up by Criterion?

Criterion as a company is of course famous for inventing the "special edition" back in the days when Laserdiscs and VHS were the collector's media of choice. They were the first ones to experiment with adding extras like "deleted scenes" and "commentary tracks". They always made it a point to hunt for the finest copies to create a transfer and to hunt diligently for added materials. The very name has become synonym with excellence in the DVD-field, and even though this often comes with a rather steep price you can always count on the movie having been done justice.

Guess what today's newsletter held? The cartoon on the top left.
See the resemblance to a certain movie's poster? I've put it underneath the cartoon so you can see for yourself...

And if that means what I think it does, Criterion can count on me for their first pre-order.
Guillermo del Toro's "Cronos" is a famous movie that has been infamously treated on the DVD-market so far. If Criterion is feeling confident enough to take a stab (pun intended), it means we'll finally get a decent transfer and sound for this brilliant film.

And I can't wait to see what extras Criterion's people have dug up...

You know, there were some issues with that R1 disc regarding subtitles, but it's been a while since I've popped mine in to check it out. Otherwise a pretty solid release, agreed. Still, I suspect the Criterion folks will have some new tidbits up their sleeves.

Will we see the film on BD? Hopefully so!!!

Hm, note to self: must do better research.

I don't own that 10th anniversary version and might have based my opinion on way back when, when I didn't have a regionfree player (and didn't even know such a thing existed) and wascursing the failed R2 offering. I also remember people being ecstatic over an upcoming new R2 edition, until it was actually released with serious AV-issues.

Anyway, recent Criterions haven't disappointed so I'm still looking forward to this!

I'd forgotten how the subtitles were done - but I think you're right (unless there was a re-released edition) - http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/7907/cronos-10th-anniversary-special-edition/?___rd=1

Strange that Criterion would release a film that already has a pretty good edition.

I will always have a love of this film. Just remember picking it up off the shelf when it was a new release, based solely on the cover. I loved Ron Perlman's character here, and I especially loved the production design.

The scene of Federico Luppi lapping up blood off the floor remains a touchstone creepy moment in general, for me.

Wow, that's good news! I've been wanting to check this movie out for a while...

I'm a fan of del Toro's and I still haven't seen this. I'll probably pick this up if it's really that good...
