Seeking to be part of a growing trend when it comes to revitalizing old horror films it comes as no surprise that a remake of the 1978 debut of one Joe Dante called Piranha will be presented in 3D. After all, it worked like a charm for Bloody Valentine 3D, a 15 million dollar film that has grossed over 71 million dollars worldwide. It's perfect, you take a wafer thin plot and storyline and dazzle it up with cutting edge 3D technology. It's a proven formula for making good money and not good movies.
So why am I interested in a remake of Piranha? Elisabeth Shue. Sure, French director Alexandre Aja of Mirrors, The Hills Have Eyes and Haute Tension fame is directing and writing this remake but of those of us who found pubescence a rather startling reality in the 80s didn't fall in love with Elisabeth Shue when we saw her in The Karate Kid, Adventures in Babysitting and two of the Back to the Future films? And she still looks good now.
Shue is playing the role of Sherrif Julie Forester, a take-charge authority figure in the community of Lake Victoria - where the action/ankle-biting takes place. She's the mother of Jake (one of the central characters in the film - the shy teenager who gets to prove his worth when human-eating fish threaten his family and friends), Laura and Zane. Moviehole
This isn't going to be high art. It's likely to be cheesy as hell, or even awful, but I'll save up my 'Scene' points and see it for free if not for a brainless diversion, cheap thrills and see an old childhood crush on screen engage in a few bouts with some manky fish with bad dental hygiene.
