So I guess most of you out there figured out that the this post about Mimic getting a release date was an April fools joke on my behalf. Sorry about that. But there was some truth to the story, Del Toro had been working on a director's cut of the film, working with a copy of his preferred cut he had saved on tape all those years ago. Last november in an interview he did with scifi.com he had this to say about the project: "I'm working on it. I'm doing it. It's going to be as close to a director's cut as we can. We actually had a great experience the other day. We watched my original cuts, and we were like, "Oh my God, this is such a f--king different movie." ... We rescued it because I kept a copy at the right moment. I said, "In case it never happens, I'm going to distribute it at conventions."
All seemed to be going great but when I was following up on my fake story yesterday (which a few websites had picked up on) I checked out deltorofilms.com, the only "official" Del Toro fan site and a site he frequents himself, forum user Spydaweb who seems to be in contact with the big man said that he had spoken with Del Toro on Tuesday and that he said that the project was no more. He didn't go in to specifics as to why that was and I've written Del Toro and asked him about it, just have to wait and see if he answers.
I was really looking forward to the director's cut and judging from the response the fake news got, both here and on other sites, so were many other people. But who knows why these things happen and it would be great to find out. So sadly it seems that this project that I was really looking forward to is dead in the water with no signs of coming back to life.
This sort of thing pisses me off to no end.
Mimic cover art.

I realize that lately it seems that any negative comments in regards to Mr. Del Toro are seen as blasphemy....BUT....I just think that his movies suck, and I mean suck big time. I'm talking donkey balls level of suckiness. Mimic was attrocious, as well as his other acid-influenced efforts. I shouldn't have to chew some 'shrooms to enjoy a movie.
While I think that Del Toro is somewhat overrated, I really don't think his movies "suck." In fact, I've really enjoyed his work, with the possible exception of "Blade II."
It's good to see his earlier work getting the premium treatment.
Laberinto del Fauno is overrated, and the Hellboy flicks are kind of bland and generic, but Cronos is quite good and deserves it's fair share of praise.
I really liked this one when it was released and I haven´t really watched this one since but I´ll definitely be picking this one up.
I was really disappointed in "Hellboy II". What the hell was that? "Harry Potter"?
"Blade II" is the best sequel... EVER!!!
So am I the only person who liked this film? Of course I went into it with low expectations, but... I'm looking forward to this and Chronos (which I've not seen *ducks*).
Glad I held off this long on ordering the Dutch DVD. He's talked about some of his "Hollywood" issues regarding Mimic on other commentaries already so I'm looking forward to seeing a DC of this (actually held off on watching the whole thing through up till now - aside from maybe a scifi channel cut a number of years ago in college).
Interesting that nobody in this thread or the other one has even mentioned "Devil's Backbone" - I think that's still my favorite flick by him overall - for the characters, atmosphere and ending.
wow what a coincidence. i watched this for the first time yesterday.who cares about a directors cut. movie was sub-standard.
THe movie has one absolutely fabulous opening credit sequence, done by the same guy who did Fincher's SEVEN, methinks.
I like the movie for what it is, and I'd love to see it get the tender-loving care in a re-cut like Alien3 did.
i like the movie...i would love to see a DC
This and Barker's NIGHTBREED are the two director's cut I most want to see in my lifetime.
Came back to bite you in the ass, eh Swarez? I too would love to see his vision of the film.
And by the way, Swarez, I thought April Fool's jokes were supposed to be good for a burst of belly laughter, not a lingering heart ache.
Cruel twist of the pen, my friend.
Still, sometimes April Fools jokes actually become true, the "Personal Soundtrack T-shirt" from ThinkGeek being a good example:

Therefore I think Swarez did a good thing with this article.
Keeping this line of thinking, I think we at Twitch should have done several of these, starting with a faked Criterion edition of Saul Bass' "Phase IV". Swarez could even have made an ant-cartoon to fit with the Scarab one which Criterion used to announce "Cronos"!
Mention it enough and Criterion might listen.
People do read these pages, you know...
Momo. I hate obvious April fools jokes and I wanted to do something other than the obvious Star Wars jokes or something similar. Plus I wanted to get people to talk about this again and this seemed like a good way to do it. But seeing how things turned out with this project I guess it didn't go as planned.
Oh, no, don't take me wrong. I meant that as a compliment, actually.
Not only that, but I think you pulled off exactly what you'd intended.
