I will be the first to admit that I do not know the first thing about how the cinemas work in Japan but there is something very intriguing about how they go about promoting films and setting up advance ticket sales. First off, promotion...
This weekend there will be a new poster for Kazuaki Kiriya's next film Goemon. It will appear in Japanese cinemas. Admittedly this is not the best resolution and I am pressed for time this morning to get this news out to you before heading out to the day job but we have put through a request for a better image with a higher resolution and if we get a favorable response we'll update right away.
And then there is the advance ticket sale. Again, my understanding of how the cinemas work in Japan is limited to non-existent but advance ticket sales are perceived to be the way to go if you want to see you favorite film in Japan. Please someone who has been over there let me know. But, this I do know, they sure do put out a pretty package for their advance tickets. Starting this Saturday Japanese residents can pick up a nifty advance ticket package. They get an advance ticket and along with that they will get a DVD. I give the floor over to Google Translate... Lawson Loppi at all over the country, the Special Limited Edition DVD Goemon ticket with predefined... It is about accepting. And unpublished scenes, cast interviews and exclusive director Kiriya Special Limited Edition DVD is set to be included in the ticket to watch national and common general advance ticket. Yeah, I wouldn't have done any better. I get the gist of it. Deleted Scenes. Cast interviews. More? Sure, it's no different than material up on a YouTube page channel but my guess would be that there are a limited number of these babies and that means collectible. And both the ticket and DVD look snazzy enough. The package costs ¥2140, that's about $28 Canadian. We'll keep that in mind once we see these babies pop up on eBay.

Advance tickets here normally aren't the way to go it seems.
With soooo many buggers in Tokyo, it doesn't matter if you book your tickets a day before or show up 4 hours before the start time, chances are the first few sessions for a popular flick will be sold out.
The Japanese will queue for anything...anything!
Anytime, any place. I once saw about 600 people queuing in a train station for 32 hours so they could be 'first' to grab the new year's 'Lucky Dip' shopping bags.
Bah.
This is the first time I've seen a movie that is kinda off the public radar be promoted so early in advance.
Sure, movies starring the latest teen idol/ mutant spawn have advances...as too famous American flicks but as far as I know, Goemon is only being sporadically trailered...in a trailer that tells nadda.
I'll pop down to Lawson this weekend and grab one if they are still available.
Given that the ticket price for adults here are usually 1800 yen, 2140 yen ain't a bad deal. Of course, the extras on this dvd will probably show up in the eventual dvd release of the film, but don't take my word for it. The previous special edition of Casshern had 3 discs and was crammed with extras.
