Finally Some US Action On BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE

by Todd Brown, March 12, 2009 9:21 PM

Been wondering what's happening as far as a US release of Chris Nahon's live action take on Blood: The Last Vampire? Because I sure have. And it's a weird thing ... despite the film being partly financed by Universal Pictures and sold internationally by Universal's Focus Features division, the US arm of the company never seems to have had all that much interest in it and they have never had it on their release slate. But now someone else does ...

Regular Twitch reader Mary has pointed out that the film has been submitted to the MPAA by Samuel Goldwyn Films. No release date yet, but at least someone is doing something with it. And if you've got any fears that things have been toned down for this version, you'll be pleased to know that it has been rated R for "strong bloody stylized violence."

On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year old, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400 year-old halfling. Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts.

When she is sent onto an American military base in Tokyo by the clandestine organization she works for, Saya immediately senses that this may be her opportunity to finally destroy Onigen, the evil patriarch of all vampires. Using her superhuman strength and her sword, she begins to rid the base of its evil infestation in a series of spectacular and elaborate showdowns. However, it is not until she forms her first human friendship in centuries with the young daughter of the bases general that Saya learns her greatest power over Onigen may well be her ability for human connection.

Looks like guilty pleasure fun possibly. Haven't seen the show, but wished this had the tone of the original film. Kinda looks like an Obechanbara with better production values. Not nessecarily a bad thing.

Looks like the British classification board likes it just as much:
The main vampire character repeatedly uses a sword to dispatch various creatures, including other vampires and winged monsters. The violence she inflicts often occurs in a rapidly edited flurry of blows without a focus on injury detail. There is, however, a large quantity of blood in evidence, which sprays from wounds in huge spurts with the strongest moments including the severing of a man’s arm and all of another man’s fingers, plus the close up sight of a sword piercing an eyeball. These moments were felt to fall under the term ‘the strongest gory images’ which, under the BBFC guidelines, are unacceptable at ‘15′, while not exceeding the bounds of the ‘18′ category.

now that I've seen an actual trailer, I'm less excited to see this.
I was really impressed by the original (I haven't caught the series),
and this just seems exactly like what AHTB and indie have said...

I think I will wait for reviews on it before I proceed.
