Filmart Day Three: TRACING SHADOW and ASTROBOY

by Todd Brown, March 25, 2009 11:35 AM

A good spin through the Filmart market floor this morning - the first day when I've been free to actually take my time and just roam - yielded a pair of notable new promos.

First, I finally stopped long enough to watch the new Astroboy footage that has been playing non-stop at the cafe in the middle of the market room and came away much impressed. From what I saw there are two reels looping there. The first is a demonstration of the process, showing different scenes in various sages of production and in the process showing off Astro's creation scene. The second reel is totally new footage, this being of Astro's moment of self-awakening, as it were, the moment he realizes he's not actually a normal boy - a moment triggered when he falls out a window and saves himself from falling by involuntarily switching on his rocket boosters. This thing looks absolutely fantastic and should make a pretty big splash when it releases later this year.

Second, a trip to the Huayi Brothers booth yielded a look at Francis Ng's wuxia flick, which has undergone a slight name change to Tracing Shadow. What they're showing here is very raw - no post production whatsoever, wires still in full view, no color correction, etc - but still quite impressive. It's very old school wire-fu with strong production values and Ng himself looks fantastic in the lead role. I'm very curious to see how this one polishes up ...

Coming later today will be the promo reel for Korean giant pig movie Chaw ...

A Francis Ng sighting! Or have I not been paying too much attention lately?

Nothing new from Storm Warriors, still slowly working its way through post.

man, thats too bad. i guess hollywood reporter got it wrong. They reported that "Universe is debuting Benny Chan's $10 million sci-fi action pic "City on Alert" at Filmart as well as unveiling a three-minute promo for "Storm Warriors," which has been sold to most Asian regions."

So no 3 minute promo?

If there was one I didn't see it. But three minutes is about what they had unofficially at AFM, this may have just been the public unveiling. It had been by request only before ...
