When Bad Trailers Happen To Good Movies: THE KAIFECK MURDER

by Todd Brown, February 14, 2009 10:32 AM

Dear producers of The Kaifeck Murder:

Merely firing the people responsible for cutting your trailer will not be anywhere near sufficient. No. Not at all. You need to find these people, drag them out back, and beat them with a stick. Thank you.

Todd Brown

Oh, my ... you know, as much as it bothers me when people cut trailers that misrepresent the content of a film I can at least understand it when they take a quiet film and punch up the energy a bit or focus on a bit player who has gone on to develop box office clout or some such thing. I mean, like it or not that makes sense as a piece of marketing. But what they've done with The Kaifeck Murder? They've not only completely failed to capture the mood and tone of the piece but they've taken a really good film - a film that I love - and made it look truly horrible. It must have taken some perverse kind of skill to do so, true, but this should not be the type of skill that you base your hiring practices upon. You can marvel at the truly horrible trailer below the break.

I was kinda able to pick out some nice shots or moments, but geeze that was a hard pill to swallow what with that silly midi music and voice over. It's like they're trying to sink the film.

Hi Todd and everybody!

I registered just because you wrote such a kind review of Kaifeck, of which I am one of the two writers. Matter of fact is Kaifeck is a genre that isn´t very popular in Germany and my guess is that even the distributor doesn´t know how to handle it. When I first saw the trailer in January I reckoned it´d be some kind of layout, but as it turned out it was the finished product. They tried to milk the autenticity of the real events which was always secondary for us in the plotting of the story. Since it´s a small film and they won´t put a lot of effort into marketing it, we will rely on word-of-mouth and therefore I wanna thank you and your readers again for doing this within your possibilities.

Thanks for commenting Chris! Hopefully the film will be able to find a good audience anyway ...
