There are a number of us in these parts that are positively salivating at the prospect of the new film from Vincenzo Natali. The genetic horror sci-fi film has a very original look, particularly in the creature design department. Couple that with Guillermo Del Toro as a producer and Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley in the lead roles, this looks to be possibly the flagship genre-flick out of Canada this year, perhaps even more than that. Why do I fire that kind of hyperbole around? Bloody Disgusting has a number of high resolution stills (that look to be scanned out of some magazine - a magazine I would like to have a subscription to) that may answer that question.
Clive and Elsa are young, brilliant and ambitious. The new animal species they engineered have made them rebel superstars of the scientific world. In secret, they introduce human DNA into the experiment. The result is something that is greater than the sum of its parts: a female animal-human hybrid that may be a step up on the evolutionary ladder. They think they may have created the perfect organisim, until she makes a final shocking metamorphosis that could destroy them ... and the rest of humanity. [IMDb]
Splice is set to hit cinemas September 2009.

From the stills it looks disturbing, which is good.
Hopefully, this will be something with the same tone and impact as Cube (one of the finest things to emerge from Canada...ever!)
This movie can not come out soon enough for me...
"One of the finest things to emerge from Canada ...ever"
If you're talking genre..like crime thriller... then without question The Silent Partner.
And speaking of Black Christmas don't forget Bob Clark's Murder By Decree with Sherlock Holmes played by Chistopher Plummer who was also great as a murderous nutjob in....The Silent Partner.
Good Call Arch. I was thinking the sci-fi/horror dept. But sure, why not, open things up. I don't think I've ever seen Murder By Decree, but Plummer is always a treat.
Kurt if you haven't seen Murder you should try and check it out it's excellent.
With Splice and that one that's set on the tundra that you guys showcased awhile ago Canada seems to be turning out some solid genre films right now.
Maybe you and Todd could have a thread with 20 or so canadian genre films you should see if you haven't. To the ones you've already mentioned I'd add stuff like The Gate ( for the stop motion work at least ) and Jodie Foster's The Little Girl Who Lived Down The Lane.
I mean just look at the difference between Let The Right One In and Twilight.
Well that is a bit of a can of worms to open considering the wide variation of 'depth' and ambition in their source material.
Ok. How about the difference between the original Right One and the Hollywood remake they are planning, to be directed by Matt Reeves. I have a feeling something will be lost in the translation.
There's something going on with Canadian film lately. I mean, "One Week" is actually getting commercials, aired on TV? The only other Canadian movie I can remember ever seeing commercials for is Good Cop Bon Cop, and I'm Canadian. So Splice and Pontypool (and One Week) getting so much attention at the same time must signal something good.
