COFFIN JOE! REPO! TURKEY SHOOT! It's The Frightfest Spring Awakening!

by Todd Brown, February 27, 2009 11:33 AM

You Londoners have no idea how good you have it, what with the fine folks at Frightfest making sure you've got all the good stuff there on the big screen on a regular basis. Coming up next - on March 7th, to be precise - at the Prince Charles Cinema, is the Frightfest Spring Awakening. One day, lots of great films. Such as? Coffin Joe's Embodiment of Evil. Repo: The Genetic Opera. Not Quite Hollywood. Shuttle. Turkey Shoot. And an unnamed secret film, and while I have no inside information on this at all - seriously, this is pure speculation - if I were a betting man I'd put my money down on that one being Lesbian Vampire Killers. FRIGHTFEST’S SPRING AWAKENING DAY
For one day only Film4 FrightFest returns to its spiritual home of the Prince Charles Cinema, off Leicester Square.

Saturday March 7 sees the UK’s most respected and popular horror and fantasy film festival unspool its annual spring screening bonanza at the newly revamped Prince Charles.

First up is Jose Mojica Marins’ triumphant return as Coffin Joe in the quite stunning hardcore shocker EMBODIMENT OF EVIL. The final part of the Brazilian bogeyman’s controversial trilogy finds the paroled sadistic undertaker back on San Paolo streets searching for a woman to bear him the perfect son.

Next is first-time director Edward Anderson’s SHUTTLE, where five travellers are picked up by an airport bus and increasingly put their gory fates in the driver’s hands. Like the uncomprehending passengers prepare to go somewhere more stomach churning and disturbing than expected on this tense and horrific road trip.

Third is Darren Lynn Bousman’s REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA. Glam-rock meets jet-black comedy in an all-singing, all-dancing gore extravaganza. FrightFest is delighted to announce that Darren Lynn Bousman (also the director of SAW II, III and IV) will be our special guest at this unique preview screening, along with actor Anthony Head.

Then comes our SURPRISE FILM, one of the most eagerly awaited British offerings of the year. The director and stars will be in attendance at this exclusive preview. Prepare to scream – and laugh!

The fifth must-see is NOT QUITE HOLLLYWOOD: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF OZPLOITATION, Mark Hartley’s brilliant documentary overview of the origins of Australian exploitation. From the rude ALVIN PURPLE to the schlock of HOWLING III this grindhouse profile bursts with energy, terrific clips, fabulously funny anecdotes and Quentin Tarantino.

Finally TURKEY SHOOT, Ozploitation’s most notorious and vilified title. Director Brian Trenchard-Smith was responsible for this high camp post-apocalyptic 1982 splatter shocker that packs as much sadism as 80 minutes can contain and is totally without redemption”.

Tickets are available at the Prince Charles cinema box office on 0870 811 2559 from Saturday 14 Feb. Individual tickets: £7.50. Day passes: £30
