The Twitch Video Player Salutes the Genius of Katsuhito Ishii

by Andrew Mack, January 28, 2009 8:28 PM

[Fresh off of the new trailer for Ishii's next film, SORASOI, I've bumped this post up from a few weeks into the future to today!]

We do love our Japanese cinema around here and one of the directors that stands out and constantly delivers tip top entertainment is Katsuhito Ishii. This talented writer and director's films have delighted audiences around the world. We here in Toronto have been privy to a number of public screenings of the equally odd and entertaining Funky Forest which won the Most Innovative Feature Film Award at the first Toronto After Dark Film Festival.

Putting together a quintet of trailers highlighting Ishii's career was actually quite easy to do because he'd only done five feature films, per se, until now. There are other projects and installations, including a animation spot on Kill Bill Vol. 1, but only five feature films until now. So pickings are easy. But it is a damned good thing his films are so awesome anyways.

Sharkskin Man and Peach Hip Girl

Party 7

Taste of Tea

Funky Forest

My Darling of the Mountains

You guys are forgetting Trava: Fist Planet! Not a movie per se, though it was redistributed as a 50 minute short film. Awesome piece though :)

I love Trava - thanks for bringing it up, Onderhond. As mentioned in the original post there's a bunch of other stuff in addition to the feature films. Like Hal & Bons and the Hokuro Kyodai animation, neither of which I've seen yet, although I want to. I'd also love to check out some of Ishii's commercial and music video work, too. (I think he did something with SMAP at one time.)
