She's Cute But Deadly! The HIGH KICK GIRL Returns!

by Todd Brown, January 14, 2009 1:59 AM

Don't let the familiar opening fool you, a brand new promo reel for Rina Takeda-starring karate flick High Kick Girl has arrived. Much longer than the original promo this one features a roughly 50-50 blend of behind the scenes footage and actual clips from the film and it's all looking good. There are very few details known about this one so far beyond the fact that newcomer Takeda plays a high school girl who must take on a secret clan of fighters. And, of course, she kicks really high. Check it out below the break.

Color me surprised. A Japanese film with good fight choreograhpy? Nice... I just hope such bone crushing martial arts isn't going to be wasted on some generic, inspirational, coming of age high school storyline ala Karate Kid.

Not as impressive without the sound effects, I'm afraid.

A few of the stuntmen here in Japan have not been too happy about this flick.

The director was apparently a zealot and was adamant that all the fighting be almost completely real. The director was so taken with Ong Bak [which had a large number of staged hits] that he refused to do any 'fake' takes, against the strong opinions of the stunt team. As a result, 3 stuntmen [that I know of] had to take some MRI scans due to repeated kicks to the head and little use of pads.

No too professional this one!

The Ong Bak team was padded to hell because Yaa really kicks hard. If you look at the behind the scenes stuff from that film you see that. They just hide it really well. It also show how a little "impact dust" helps sell a hit.

That's the reason most of the ONG BAK villains have such funky hair; the wigs disguise the helments (it also lets them recycle bad guys; the Japanese-looking fight club contestant with the big hair shows up sans wig as a henchman in the finale).
