I haven't thought about Gaiman in a long time, pretty much since the conclusion of the Sandman. Now I simply cannot imagine him not acting as either Cain or Lucien should that project ever see light of day. He simply has that horror anthology host bit down.
i've always thought Neil Gaiman the writer is way overrated. the Sandman series is just a whole lot of pretentious meandering. his best work, to me, is The Tragical Comedy Or Comical Tragedy Of Mr Punch. powerful, scary, resonant.
Huh?
Are you sure we're talking about the SAME Neil Gaiman?
If so, he's awfully quiet about it on his blog and homepage. And I never noticed any preference towards such material in any of his works...
(EDIT) OK, I wikied him and it seems you're right, at least about his parents and upbringing. Damn, never would have thunk it. I'm not sure if he's still a practicing member though...
Scientology is a subject i've been reading up on extensively (nope, sorry to disappoint you, but i have no interest in joining them). and i've come across this Neil Gaiman is a Scientologist thing more than once. in fact, there's a video somewhere of David Gaiman being interviewed about Scientology. but i can't really confirm whether Neil is a practising Scientologist.
Sorry, not buying that scenario. Neil Gaiman is a huge Sceino in the closet.
Well after the events you mention, Mark Pope... claims on 4.4.1995: "Neil (Gaiman) is a long time Scientologist".
In 2004 and 2006 “The Gaiman Family” of the USA were awarded “Patron” and “Founding Patron” status. According to ex scientologist Jon Attack, “Patrons (are) the highest ranking membership - of the International Association of Scientologists.” They give the most money and the Gaiman's are right up there with the other celebrities.
Neil Gaiman's wife Mary was declared "clear" in 2002, 19 years after "they blew" to the USA. That same year Mary Gaiman was awarded The "Patron with Honors" according to the The Magazine of the International Association of Scientologists December Issue. Oh yeah, and just above her listed as "IAS Patron Meritorious" is Sheila Gaiman, Neil mother.
Why do people keep citing that in 1983 Neil Gaiman is declared "suppressive" when in 1988, FIVE YEARS AFTER THE DECLARE, Neil’s name appears in graduate lists in The Auditor Worldwide (published by AOSH UK) as
Auditor #202 (copyright 1986). Neil is listed as completing three courses: the Hubbard Senior Sec Checker Course #222 (1988), the 21 Dept Org Board Course #227 (1988) and
the Hubbard Basic Art Course. Gaiman's not out, he's attending courses like a good little Sceino robot.
If Gaiman is "out" in 1983, why is he taking Scientology courses in 1988 and listed in The Auditor? Seriously, do the math.
Or go to the Scientology Celebrity blog and search Neil Gaiman who is listed on the Scientologists blog with links and Scienos gushing over how the "tech" works so well for Neil, including this remark from Scieno Grahame when asked about Neil: "My answer is that I heard from a close relative of his that he (Neil Gaiman) is taking services at Flag."
Declares mean diddly, they are used as a form of control, as evidenced by Neil Gaiman's father, the infamous David Gaiman being declared suppressive briefly during the CMO takeover of the GO and now an OT VIII (having just finished a big course in 2007) and happily recruiting the RUSSIANS (see my earlier post). So where is this mythical declare on Neil Gaiman? Nowhere to be found.
It is naive to think Neil is somehow surrounded by high-ranking Scientologists, some of the biggest Scienos in the world, and yet not involved in the cult? Neil Gaiman is probably playing both sides, he never talks about it because he is deeply involved. He contributes money, big money and downplays his involvement, he is taking services at FLAG. He is a Scientologist who is either ashamed or is just a canny businessman who knows that his fans freak out whenever the obvious is brought up.
There have been a lot of great artists who are dorks. If Scientologists thought they could get money out of you, they would pretend they were ducks, so depending on the audience they will downplay their involvement. Tom Cruise downplayed his involvement until he was outed by journalist who were then fair-gamed.
The Gaiman Family USA is Neil Gaiman's family, NOT Gaiman's sister Claire Edwards, head of Scieno recruiting. See the ugliness for yourself.

Of course Neil Gaiman doesn't talk about being a scientologist-- none of them do, (except Tom Cruise right after he stopped taking his medication.) Don't you see they're all profoundly embarrassed about it? Not only embarrassed, but downright terrified to be discovered. Have you ever heard/seen/read Gaiman ever actually stating" "I am absolutely, unquantifiably NOT affiliated with the Church of Scientology?
You never will. It's disappointing, 'm sure, but have you ever thought why it's disappointing to learn your heroes are scientologists? Because it's like discovering someone is mentally ill.
For the second time in two years, I am frustrated and a bit sad to begin discovering the work of a great, oft-overlooked filmmaker upon reading news of their death. Such was the case last year with Jean Rollin, whose passing prompted me to dig into his filmography and in turn discover one of the most unique genre filmmakers...

Berlinale 2012 kicks off in three days, and with its vast, diverse international program, preparation is mandatory. So, between stockpiling warm clothes and memorizing how to say "I don't speak German" in German, I've been combing the program and singling out potential highlights in each festival category. I'll be sharing these over the next several days before I depart,...

*Some Spoilers, Fair Warning*Perhaps a goofy co-incidence that Facebook filed with the SEC to launch its $5 Billion (with a B) initial public offering in the same week as this viral/web advertised film hit cinema screens. The dollar value for the filing is itself equal parts news-catcher, market-hubris and ultimately an underscore on where society, in the here and now,...

A new year of indie film has officially kicked off with the completion of Sundance 2012. Will it be the fest faves like Beasts of the Southern Wild or The Surrogate that make big waves over the next 12 months? Perhaps challenging critical darlings like Compliance and Room 237 will find a way to break through. Or will it...
