Full Theatrical Trailer For Miike's YATTERMAN Brings The Madness!

by Todd Brown, January 24, 2009 10:57 AM

Whoo! The trio of previously released teasers for Takashi Miike's big budget live action adaptation of classic anime Yatterman certainly hinted at the goofiness that was to come but they have just been thoroughly outdone by the freshly arrived full, theatrical trailer. This is just a shade under two minutes of goodness with Miike at his brightly colored and physics defying best. And, yes, the button popping costume (and the actress who popped said buttons) are prominently featured. Looks like Miike;s channeling Tex Avery for this one, take a look below the break to see what I mean.

I guess it wouldn't be proper commentary on the film on this site if no mention was made of Kyoko Fukada's costume as though no Japanese actress before was adorned in a slightly revealing outfit.

I still remember watching the original cartoon on tv, and I still remember the theme song.

Damn, I am old. :(

user-pic

Well I think it is safe to say that nobody does it like the Japanese.

user-pic

I liked Miike better in the days of Ichi the Killer, DOA and Visitor Q. I understand that director needs to evolve and do other things instead of being stuck, but I am really disappointed that this is the direction Miike has chosen. I just hope he will do some other things after his childish phase will be over.

user-pic

wow he's turned kyko fukada into an MILF that works.

user-pic

I was still a bit unsure which direction this film was exactly going before, but this looks fantastic.
Kinda reminds me of Hideaki Anno's Cutie Honey ...

just a bit of a shame of that terrible J-pop-song over the second half of the trailer ...

And I don't think Takashi Miike is in a "childish fase", I think he will always be young at heart, willing to try about anything out of pure love for movies ...

Yatta,yatta,yatta...in a good way!!! Miike rocks!!!

user-pic

Looks like a sequel to ZEBRAMAN.

user-pic

I think this will be fantastic. I was slightly disappointed with Yukai War but this looks like it will deliver the good. It reminds me also of Cutey Honey, a film I love as well.

user-pic

Cutey Honey was fucking awesome.
As was The Great Youkai War. Zebraman was ghastly, though. Hopefully this will be more Youkai Honey than Zebra.

user-pic

I am of the completely opposite opinion. I think Zebraman is one of Miike's best and Cutie Honey was ok, but not really deserving of any significant praise.

user-pic

This looks fun, end of conversation.

user-pic

It's just weird watching this and thinking about the fact that this guy made AUDITION.

user-pic

Amen to the audition remark.
And I'm still giggling about the shot of the T-Rex on the disappearing bridge.

user-pic

This is just crazy, and I love it.The best part is the fact that Hollywood will never do a remake of this movie.

user-pic

"The best part is the fact that Hollywood will never do a remake of this movie."

Amen to that one.

user-pic

this is one of best looking anime or cartoon adaptation I have seen and I am a big JAP anime and movie fan..I Love It and it comes from last person you will ever expect... LOL...

user-pic

I don't know what comes out of the pig's nose at the end of the trailer, but I want one. Maybe both.

user-pic

I'm completely alone in my office and yet I cringed in embarassment watching this. I must have looked over my shoulder at least three times making sure the people who aren't here weren't walking by.

Here's a question. I realize the budgets for Japanese films are very low, and productoin/post is much much quicker. Yet, for such a technologically advanced culture. Why is the CG so stiff and poorly done in the majority of Japanese films. Hell, CG cutscenes in Playstation games are usually better than major Japanese feature films.

user-pic

Yeah, i also wonder about the CGI thing, but aside from that i loved the trailer. It reminds me of something i love about Japan: they're never afraid of being "cheesy" "corny" or whatever you might want to called. In the west it seems that many just feel that they're too "good" to do something absurd or "ridicule". And the irony of course is that over here we still get plenty of movies with an aged Bruce Willis figthing hackers and flying cars, or some other nonesense that for some reason many don't see it "cheesy" at all.
