Full Theatrical Trailer For Kaz Kiriya's Martial Art Fantasy GOEMON

by Todd Brown, January 24, 2009 10:23 AM

Yes, I understand there are people out there who don't care for the work of Kaz Kiriya - most particularly his debut feature Casshern - and I can even kind of understand the arguments, it's just that I think they're wrong, wrong, wrong. For my money Kiriya is one of the most striking and purely visual stylists on the face of the planet today and I've been drooling in anticipation of his sophomore feature - a Robin Hood sort of martial arts fantasy legend titled Goemon - since the day it was first announced.

We had the initial teaser a little while back but now Kiriya has dropped the full theatrical trailer and, zowie. This plays like the purest anime adaptation I've ever seen, but for the fact that it's not based on an anime and it's amazing to me how much his visual palette has changed since Casshern while still remaining obviously his own. Very, very tasty. Check it out below the break.

@Mack: LOL. I loved the visuals of Casshern, and thats all I liked about it. This looks good indeed, but sometimes like Casshern a bit over the top. Hope the editing has improved though

user-pic

can totally tell that its a lot of cgi but looks really coooooool

user-pic

I love Casshern....and this one looks like a blast.

user-pic

Certainly some pretty pictures, some out of this world camera moves and all; this is the stuff of the bright eyed fifteen year old filmmaker/dreamer in me. Yet does the music trick me into stirring me? Is it just going to be a flash in the pan anime/video game bruhaha and offer no resonance? Time will tell...

user-pic

Of all the bluescreen CG films like Sin City, this one looks like it takes the most advantage of the possibilities that this type of film making can do. Camera angles and movements that a real camera could never do, gorgeous saturated colors- this thing looks insane.

I really liked Casshern but thought it had its flaws, but this trailer just feels like Kiriya has taken the next step. Won't know until its released, but of this fulfills its potential...

user-pic

he oughta direct an olympics ceremony sometime.

user-pic

i hated casshern, i'll probably hate this too. that said i'll still watch it.

user-pic

Reminds me a lot of the Final Fantasy games for some reason...
With that being said, if they ever make a live action FF, this guy should be involved.

user-pic

Looking good ! do I hope the characters are less chatty this time round, just give us more quality fight scenes.

user-pic

That's how I imagine a Live-Anime.
Awesome!

user-pic

Wow. That looked insane. Like straight jacket insane. This is something that needs to be seen on a big screen.

user-pic

"it’s just that I think they’re wrong, wrong, wrong"

No we're not, Casshern's script was a mess, it was anime cliche 101, in the worst sense possible. Not even all the flashy visuals can sustain a movie that has a bad story and one dimensional characters.

user-pic

bleh, i like the concept but the CGI is just so so

user-pic

Stylish! And, errr.... stylish! Live action action-anime! You hit the nail on the head, Cutermaran.

user-pic

I'm going to go ahead and quote Christopher Walken here: "Wowie wow wow wow"

@ ChevalierAguila
Well, Casshern's script ain't a mess, since there is not a single scene "out of order". I can't find one thing that I'd change basically. But certain types of plot exposition work for some people and not for others. For example I think that 3:10 to Yuma doesn't make sense in ANY possible way. Like I can't imagine why someone would want to do it or watch it, let alone like it at all...
Also the words anime and cliche kinda don't have place in the same sentence.

I never got around seeing Casshern as most sites I visit to read reviews gave it quite a bit of negative flak.Too little robot bashing as someone mentioned some comments ago.

This new movie looks very nice visually,I hope the story is compelling and not to hard to follow. And finally I also hope we,Europe, get to see the whole movie as we all to often get stuck with a cut down version that makes no sense what so ever.

Imagine this movie run on a Blu-ray disc,I`m drooling just thinking about it.

Man this trailer is off the hook! Casshern was a good movie for me, not great but not bad by any stretch of the imagination. I hope this one astounds me as I love the way kaz kiriyas visual style and use of CG seems to have been turned up a couple of notches on this one!

user-pic

I'm not talking about the people here at twitch, but most of the fans of the movie that i have encountered in the web are mostly adolescent anime fanboys. It's the same people that enjoyed Advent Children and other assorted junk.

Heck, even if the fights were plenty and fun to watch i could pass the awful writting, but there battles are few and not very well directed. So yeah, for the life of me i can't see how anyone could have enjoyed that film. But yeah, that's just my opinion.

user-pic

If you guys want to see eye candy and a excellent movie see the Black Narcissus its a 1947 movie film in Technicolor directed by Michael Powell.
Here is a movie that even do it is made completely in a set, and you can see the false background, the creators of the film could overcome that and use it to make an excellent movie. The atmosphere, and set decoration are astonishing and the scrip is good.

user-pic

Agreed. Black Narcissus is a classic.

user-pic

I gotta agree with Chevalier on this one (although, I'm not sure if I've read a single positive comment from you ever on the site).

Casshern was very pretty, but it was a dung heap of a "film." It's the type of dribble only a pure OTAKU could enjoy, let alone love.

And I also agree with Ard Vijn. A film like that requires a certain taste. I can see why people would find it enjoyable as a guilty pleasure, hell, I own Onechanbara & Yo Yo Girl Cop. But all the comments hyping it as a powerful and important masterpiece? That kind of praise can only come from the type of uber geek that actually cried while playing Final Fantasy 7.

This looks really pretty too. And at least the art direction looks more cohesive. Casshern kept going between Steam Punk, to pure modern, to World War era. Every scene felt like it belonged in an entirely different movie.

I just hope the acting isn't so ridiculous in this. A bunch of characterless lady boys with melodramatic trauma ridden past and shitloads of hair gel who scream a lot make for really lame, untimidating villains. I realize it's somewhat of a cultural thing. But it was out of control in Casshern.

I'm intrigued by the trailer and will absolutely check this out, but I'll keep my reservations.

user-pic

Casshern was incredible. Period.
It has everything going for it.
And this looks incredible.
I love Kiriya's effort.
It is immense.

user-pic

Damn, Indiemaker0583 is onto something. I did indeed cry during FF-VII (and even FF-VIII)...

user-pic

The fact that people are mocking Japanese anime and video games on a thread for 'Goemon' shows how trivial their remarks are. And what is with telling people what they love is garbage? Criticizing art is one of the most pointless aspects of cinema. I love it, you don't, now go watch something you like and chill out. oh yeah, and anyone who doesn't like Casshern is dumb :-p

user-pic

Casshern displays a astonishingly inept sense of story coherence. The images are lovely, but added together, they mean nothing. It makes for a brilliant trailer, but awful movie.

user-pic

And like the Energizer Bunny, the comments both pro and con for 'Goemon' or is it 'Cassrhern' keep on goeming, and goeming, and goeming...

user-pic

The interest in this movies is an indication of just how lacking this genre has been in the last few years. Every "Live Action" adaptation of a Manga or an Anime has fallen somewhat short of pleasing everyone. I say bring the pain. Over the top action, eye popping visuals and gore galore. I don't need a Akira Kurosawa type plot, I don't have to get to know the protagonist. I just need to know why he's on this mission of death and that anyone and anything standing between him and fulfilling his Death Mission is going to come to swift and well choreographed death.

user-pic

All this discussions would let anyone think we are actually talking about a pretty challenging movie or something like that, not the CGI bad cliche-fest that Casshern was. Also:

-I love anime, and i love the Final Fantasy games, but in the case of the first there are levels of quality, just like in any other medium. And in the case of the late, if i had to choose an FF game for it's story it would be VI, Tactics and XII. I liked VII and VIII, but there's a lot of things wrong with their respective stories. So no, criticizing cliches common in certain animes and videogames makes a lot of sense and is not nitpicking, trying to look "cool" or something like that. That i like a certain medium of expresion doesn't mean i' going to blindly love everything that comes out of it.

-Yeah, everyone has their own taste, and i'm not trying to convince anyone of disliking anything here, but i think there are certain things that can be objectivily discussed about movies. I can perfectly respect people saying that they loved Casshern, but saying it's a "masterpiece", and that others who didn't liked are wrong or something is certainly a valid reason to debate the actual pros and cons of the film.

-I have posted plenty of positive stuff about several movies :O

I think that's all.

user-pic

I also rate Casshern as one of my favorite movies. It's pure visual amazement wrapped up in a filmic bow with a side dish of awesome.

NOW, can someone keep an eye peeled for a nice 720p/1080p QT trailer for Goemon? I'm not a fan of the Flash versions locked into the official website.
