Now, I'm not going to lie to you. I'm not much of a gamer. I used to play a fair bit but haven't had the time to keep up with things since my college days and even at my peak ... well, let's just say that I was the kid with an Intellivision deck when everybody else was going Atari. And, honestly, I've not played a single one of the Square Enix Final Fantasy titles so I'm not going to try and bluff my way through storyline or game interface or anything like that. But what I will say is this: the work Square Enix has put into their games has put conventional animation houses to shames for years now and that trend doesn't look to be ending any time soon.
The thirteenth entry in the hugely popular Final Fantasy series is coming and the first trailer has just arrived. In a word, stunning. And it looks rather like they've held on to some of the designs from the Animatrix short they did. Pretty, pretty, pretty. Check it out below the break.

It does suck that Square Pictures had to close down though - as mediocre (though hardly bad) the story for their Final Fantasy movie was, the visuals were incredible and it would of been amazing to see more stuff come out of their animation house, besides the Animatrix short.
So it's just me who thinks the cgi is fugly (not talking about technical accomplishment) and the directing is even worse? I didn't even reach the end of the trailer ...
The visual quality in the game cinematics from Square never ceases to amaze me and this is no exception. I believe Square is going to release a directors cut of Final Fantasy: Advent Children with new scenes added to the film in mid-2009. It would be awesome if Square continues to produce more animated films in the future.
Speaking of animation, Sega's own animation studios has produce a short film called Sonic: Night of the Werehog. The animation rivals some of the best studios. Check out the short here:

How was FF XII retooled? Matsuno got the boot yes, but still the game conserved a lot of his usual touch. It's no Vagrant Story or FFT, but it's very good, it's just that a lot of fanboys of FFVII and X hated because it didn't have a corny love story, or any of the usual silly cliches.
BTW, Takeshi Kaneshiro is the one in Onimusha 1 and 3, not Tadanobu Asano.
As for FF XIII, nothing against Nomura as a designer, i actually do like his over-the-top designs, but him being involved in other areas do make me doubt a bit. So far 13 looks a bit like a rehash of 7, 8 and 10. The game is taking a while to appear anyway, and i have other titles to complete meanwhile (Valkyria Chronicles, Persona, etc)
Whoa. That's pretty awesome I have to say.
Huge FF fan here, but actually disappointed about everything that was released after 9. And even 9 was not that great. Now I still haven't played 12, although I really want to, but after I saw the first screenshots of 13 I was like wow, this will rock. But after seeing the trailer I already got a bit disappointed. Yes the graphics look superp, Square Enix always hit that spot on, but I don't know if the game will draw my attention with the story. But we will wait and see what happens.
Awesome thing about that Onimusha 3 cutscene is that it's all choreographed by the one and only Donnie Yen.
By Donnie Yen? Really? oO
FF tactics is most probably my favourite game as well as Suikoden 2. I played a lot of FF titles and after 6 and 7 I was always dissapointed.
When I played FFXII I felt somehow a part of the tactics feeling had returned. Also I loved the new combat system they developed for it.
This one looks prety gorgeous, The aesthethics look like they have returned to the good path, and at least the main character doesn´t look clumsy. I´m in for sure.
Anybody knows anything new about the other project called FFXIII versus? the team involved was the same of Advent children, I think. I remember the teaser from...2 years ago? and was fairly interesting
