Canadian Music Week announces the film lineup for the 2009 edition of the festival. In its second year, CMW’s Music For The Screen Film Festival will feature a psychedelic musical, a Canadian metal icon, the roaming undead, experimental dance, folk troubadours and the long awaited return to the screen of a forgotten Canadian Oscar nominee. The daylong series will take place at the NFB Cinema, National Film Board of Canada, 150 John Street, Toronto on Saturday, March 14th.

This is the second feature film from Wim Vandekeybus and his experimental dance troupe Ultima Vez. The acclaimed Belgian choreographer and filmmaker collaborates closely once again with Denver musician David Eugene Edwards of 16 Horsepower and Woven Hand. Edwards provides music and appears within the film as Vandekeybus paints a portrait of an isolated community coping with mass tragedy.

The final work of Ryan Larkin – the Canadian animator nominated for an Oscar in 1960, who sadly slid into obscurity afterwards. He was living homeless in Montreal and was brought back into the spotlight as the subject of a 2004 Oscar winning short. Laurie Gordon and the Montreal-based band Chiwawa, asked Larkin to provide a few sketches for a music video. This set in motion Spare Change, a full-blown, short animated film that Gordon completed on Larkin's behalf following his death in early 2007.

Documenting the first show of Joseph Arthur's 2005 tour at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, the film is an unforgettable blend of music, art and drama. Performances are inter-cut with scenes of Arthur speaking with moving sincerity about his career, his life and his spiritual journey as a person and a musician. He is a fixture on the Toronto music scene, a regular visitor to the city who has become a CMW staple and one of our favourite guests.

The story is of cult local-metal icon Anvil, a band that hit their peak in the late seventies and have simply refused to say die ever since. The film, directed by Sacha Gervasi, tracks the band through a turbulent year in their life. A compelling bit of work that pokes holes in the notion of rock and roll stardom while also painting a portrait of men unable to let go of their childhood dreams no matter what the cost.

Fresh from a successful premiere at the Slamdance Festival, the movie makes its Canadian premiere at CMW. The feature film includes writer-director Jordan Galland of rock bands Domino and Dopo Yume, along with Devon Aoki (Sin City), Jeremy Sisto (The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things) and the Karate Kid himself – Ralph Macchio. An original score by Sean Lennon, Galland turns Hamlet on its head.
