BIG MAN JAPAN (aka DAI NIPPONJIN) Coming To America! And There's A Trailer To Prove It!

by Todd Brown, January 23, 2009 5:15 AM

A middle-aged slacker living in a rundown, graffiti-ridden slum, Daisato’s job involves being shocked by bolts of electricity that transform him into a stocky, stick-wielding giant several stories high who is entrusted with defending Japan from a host of bizarre monsters. But while his predecessors were national heroes, he is a pariah among the citizens he protects, who bitterly complain about the noise and destruction of property he causes. And Daisato has his own problems –an agent insistent on branding him with sponsor advertisements, an Alzheimer-afflicted grandfather who transforms into a giant in dirty underwear, and a family who is embarrassed by his often cowardly exploits. A wickedly deadpan spin on the giant Japanese superhero, BIG MAN JAPAN is an outrageous portrait of a pathetic but truly unique hero.

Why do we love Japanese film? We love it because of the inspired lunacy of films like Big Man Japan, a film that could only have come from one nation on god's green earth , a film that is now coming to North America as the final entry in Magnet's Six Shooter Film Series. This one is better experienced than understood. Get started on that front with the new trailer, embedded below the break.

This is definitely at least worth a rental, if not a purchase. Looks like it could give Kawasaki Minoru a run for his money.

Well, I had the R2UK DVD of this on pre-order since October (which is what all the retailers had as the release date), and nothing forthcoming to date, so I've cancelled it and ordered a R4 copy instead (thank you Madman discout voucher!)

Very good film with a mediocre trailer. Oh, Magnet. You surprise me with your marketing strategies yet again!

Yeah I had the r2uk release pre-ordered for a while but got the hong kong disc instead, but if this release has subbed extras then I will definetly be double-dipping, what an awesome movie.
