WOLF MAN Says Grr.

by Todd Brown, December 10, 2008 12:18 AM

Going to take a quick moment here to plug one of my other efforts elsewhere. I've been writing for the AMC TV blogs for a good little while now, mostly turning in a weekly column tracking the buzz in the world of science fiction but I've done a couple longer form things for their horror blog lately that I'm rather proud of. Both are what they call Webstalker columns, an extended piece tracking fan chatter on a specific project. I've done two of these recently, one on the upcoming Hellraiser remake a couple weeks ago while, appearing today, is a piece I did on the upcoming Wolf Man remake. They're a little different from what I normally do here, but I've had fun with them.

We need more werewolf movies! Enough with the vampires already.

Bummer; I like me some good vampire shtuff.

fetch fox. I hear you. I hear you a lot and in genreal I agree with that, but something as truly awful as the initial episode simply garners fail. Plus, I must admit that I don't like the Rice-y romanticizing of the vampire I see in Twilight or Trueblood. I'll take the far more feral and ambiguous tone of Let the Right One in. (Those who have seen the film - question did you find the ending to be a happy one or a melancholic horrific one? I lean towards the latter).

Dog Soldiers would like to have a word with you.

And regarding Let the Right One In: I thought the ending where somewhere in the middle. They love each other, but will have to live as outsiders, constantly moving, for the rest of their lives. I kinda thought it was a happy one either way. They have each other, after all.

I understand your opinion Kurt, and at first I felt somewhat the same. True Blood is not for everyone, and I personally find the wild and ferocious vampire stories more intriguing. There was just something about this series that kept me watching.
I feel an urge to see "Let the Right One in" now that its been brought up. I am in need of a new and well made vampire movie.

We also have to look at how Oskar is behaving in the film and how Eli is basically molding him to be more aggressive. He is a very violent boy with very violent fantasies and could well be on the way to become a killer. You can see that in the way he caresses his knife and the feeling of ecstasy when he hits his bully for the first time. But he is also someone who needs to be accepted and loved and there for is a perfect candidate for Eli's helper position. Is that the reason she singled him out or just a coincident?

I really need to read that book. I'll pick it up in the states if I can find it.

And Yes Swarez, I like how the title certainly can applied in the case of role-models, (i.e. the right role models at an early age are very important!)

The book's amazing, I heartily recommend it. The film doesn't really change anything, it just omits things due to timing. There are some characters omitted entirely, some subplots truncated, etc. And one of the big things you lose is Hakan's backstory ... Eli definitely manipulates him but not really in the way you think. It's much ickier.

(in other words: Todd, I don't agree with you!)

:cheese:

Hey, I never said they didn't tilt the film one way or another, I just said they omitted things rather than changing them. I'm pretty hard pressed to think of anything in the film that doesn't appear pretty much as-is in the book as well.

But we agree on the most important thing: both book and film are great.
I was just surprised at how dissimilar in, I don't know, FLAVOR (for lack of a better word) they were...
