It seems an unusual cultural collision, I know, but it actually happened: the mass adoption of American sock-hop and rockabilly culture by Russian counter-cultural youth. I suppose in the Soviet Union of the time there couldn't be anything all that much more rebellious than taking on such an incredibly American persona but looking on it with Western eyes, with that era now generally looked back on through rose-colored glasses here, it just seems odd.
Odd or not, the cultural movement - more accurately the kids participating in it - was known as stilyagi, and it's being revisited in an upcoming Russian comedy-drama of the same name.
