Winning A Whole Lot Of Nothing For Make Up Effects: Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT

by Todd Brown, November 4, 2008 3:56 AM

Ahem. So, Frank Miller's The Spirit is not exactly tearing things up in terms of fan anticipation, most fans of the character reacting with a mixture of shock and horror at the tone set by the teasers and trailers so far. And they aint about to get a whole lot happier. I'm not sure exactly when this image of Samuel L Jackson was released from the film but it quite possibly has the worst makeup job I've ever seen from any sort of professional production. Ever. Memo to Frank Miller: Taking the five minutes or so that you'd have needed to smooth out the latex edges around Jackson's wig and sideburns before shooting would've saved you hundreds of man hours spent doing it digitally after the fact. Ouch.

hahaha holy crap, what a catch. That's terrible indeed. Makes me remember the Chinese movie 'Colour of the loyalty (2005)' where Eric Tsang had the wear fake eyebrows and it looked down right ridiculous. Shame directors don't spot the evident failure.

Wow. just wow. How did nobody in the production think this looks like crap?

Weird that. How many people saw this prior to release? You'd things someone would say something.

Maybe it's part of the plot?

Like... he had to disguise himself quickly, or is a serial killer who wears his victims' sideburns?

Looks intentional. It's not something you'd just miss through production.

Agree with what other people are saying. This is so shoddy looking that you have to believe it's either intentional or was always intended to be obscured once the whole digital look is finished. If I'm wrong . . . ouch!

I don't know; in JUMPER, Jackson's Sisqo-esque silver spray-painted coif is pretty lousy too (you can see the silver dye running down from his hair onto his face and the back of his neck).

This makes me think that its not a creative decision but rather Sam Jackson just begin really excited to be in make-up.
Jackson: "THIS SHIT GETS ME OFF! LET'S GO, MOTHERFUCKER!"
Make-up guy: "Uh, Mr. Jackson? Mr. Jackson, I can't let you go out like this ye....NO, MR. JACKSON! NO! STOP FIDGETING! NO! BAD, MR. JACKSON! VERY BAD!"
Jackson: "IT GEEEEEEETS MEEEEEE AWWWWWWFFFFF....." (exits through a hole in the wall he creates)
Make-up guy "....I am so fired."

He's bald and clean-shaven throughout all the rest of the shots in the trailers... I think it's obviously intentional.
