To loud wailing and a gnashing of teeth from the trekkie community, the first screenshot has been released of the Enterprise from JJ Abram's upcoming Star Trek movie.
And you can see it here.
At first I didn't see what the hubbub was all about, looked slick but pretty much like the good-ole-Enterprise to me, right?
But... check where the saucer is attached to the body. No longer at the front but at the back?
Does that mean the new Enterprise has its head coming out of its ass?
Is that a cool new trick it can do?
Anyway, I can remember the first reaction to the Batmobile way back in 1988, and the announcement by Warners that Michael Keaton was going to be Bruce Wayne. A near-lethal backlash followed but it didn't stop the movie from becoming a huge success, and people warmed quickly to both Keaton and his pimped Jaguar.
So who knows...

It cracks me up that Kirk looks like James Van Der Beek in Rules of Attraction. Actually with all the young bods in this film, perhaps an End-of-the-Universe party/orgy is in order.
/nah, I guess fan fiction fills that particular void.
This whole 'enterprise' is a silly thing. But hey, the updated ship looks great, perhaps the first positive thing to come along since they cast Simon Pegg.
Then it's a success for the new Kirk, because that's always what I thought William Shatner was saying with the way he looked.
Qunito's Spock looks spot on.
What do you mean that the saucer is attached to the back instead of the front? Looks no different from before.
Yeah, I guess I don't see a huge difference either. Definitely not on the Batmobile scale of re-design IMO. Either way, it looks pretty damn cool. Makes me wish I was more of a Star Trek fan - tho I guess that means I might find less to be disappointed with when this thing finally comes out!
And people are whining about this?
Err.. it DOES look different. The attachment to the mid-section looks like it's at the front like always, but take a closer look and you see the attaching part is actually in the middle of it, past the point where the mid-section starts tapering into a tail. Hence my remark about it being attached "at the back".
As for the whining, my guess is that if this had been any other ship in the Trek mythos nobody would have bothered to comment, but seeing as how this is THE NEW ENTERPRISE for maybe a whole new series of movies, some people get a bit emotional.
Looks good.
Space... the Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before J.J. Abrams got hold of it...
I assume the giant blue glowing thing is the engine, which means it is moving to the right of the picture, and thus, the tails are the front and the saucer is the back.

*facepalm*
Andrew Cunningham just made me spill my coffee.
:cheese:
Mind you, I actually made that mistake for REAL with the spaceship of "Blake's 7". I got a toy model of it as a kid, and it was months before I saw the first episode (The Netherlands were a bit late as usual...) and noticed the ship actually moved the other way.
