Changes Brewing With The Twitch Video Player ...

by Todd Brown, November 5, 2008 8:40 AM

Be on the lookout for changes and quirks popping up with the Twitch Video Player over the next few days. Our video provider - Brightcove - has announced that they are canceling the free service that we had been using effective in December which means that between now and then we'll be tinkering with the new paid service to decide whether it's worth the money or if we'll be packing up and heading elsewhere. Up sides to the new version are that it appears to load faster, allows for full screen playback and a few other things but the interface so far is less intuitive on the back end and actually appears less customizable than what we were getting for free so I'm mixed on the whole thing ...

That sucks! You've put in so much work building the video library, so I'll cross my fingers the pay service is affordable and does what you want it to.

Boo to Brightcove!

The full screen feature is nice, but I hope Brightcove isn't charging an amount that would break twitch.

They won't say up front what it'll cost, which is worrying. Sounds like they're going to set rates case by case. If ad revenue will cover it we'll stay with them but if notthen it's off to Vimeo or Revver or some other service. We'll definitely stay video-capable but it'll suck to lose the archive.

Vimeo is nice, though I don't envy you the tedious process of reuploading everything.
