There are a lot of them this year - sixty three in all - and the complete list of submitted films for the Best Foreign Film category at the 2009 Oscars has just been revealed. The final five nominations will be culled from this list and announced in January. And that list of final nominees may very well include such Twitch faves as Waltz With Bashir, White Night Wedding, Tony Manero, Perro Come Perro, Love of Siam, Three Monkeys, or Mermaid, all of which hae been submitted. It's a good year ...
Although there are some great films on the list, I'm pretty disappointed in Sweden for not submitting "Let the Right One In"
It hasn't been released yet over there so that's one of the reasons. The other one is most likely because it's a horror film.

I was actually just about to comment on Sweden's entry this year and how it was my favorite of the festival. I've yet to hear about "Let the Right One In", however I will be shocked if Everlasting moments is not a nominee at the Oscars this year. It was beautifully shot, the performances range from suttle, to manic and the direction it's what you would expect from Jan Troell. It is well deserved indeed.
I was able to see The Counterfeiters last year at TIFF, and called it's win after nominations were announced last year...I'm hoping for 2 in a row.
Also, White Night Wedding was a hoot, but I don't think it has the traditional Best Picture "feel" to it.
Waltz with Bashir.....meh. I think I bought into the hype too much before I saw it. It was decent, but nothing to write home about.
Actually, Ital's Gomorra is pretty amazing (but probably we would have more chances with Il Divo, which is simply a masterpiece)
yes, good lord- Gomorra was my favorite of the year, that is until I saw Il Divo! these guys just pushed the envelope a bit further. No more mourning for loss of the old masters :D
