Behold The Most Confusing (And Confused) Trailer Ever.

by Todd Brown, September 19, 2008 3:58 AM

Okay, so the title's a bit of an overstatement and the trailer for Russia's Platon (Платон) may very well make more sense to those who actually speak the language but, seriously, take a look at this thing and tell me what sort of movie this is. Is it a romance? A comedy? An action flick? What's with the old guys? What's with the runway models? It seems like there are four or five different movies fighting to get out in this one and none of them seem to want to have anything to do with the others. By the time the guy started pouring stuff on smiling-girl's head it all just sort of melted into surreal happiness for me ... check it in the Twitch Player below the break.

The Platon trailer doesn't load-up. Could you check this out?

Should be working now.

Unfortunately the trailer does not make sense to those who actually speak Russian. All i can read that Platon is a seller of happiness. My guess it is another lame comedy.

Wait, wait, wait.

Definitely this isn't a regular comedy. However, Pavel Volya is one of the most famous Russian stand-up comedians. He made his name by making toilet jokes about Russian bohemian cult icons, pop-stars and other persons like them. Claiming someone as a "asshole of Russian pop-scene" was quite normal and natural for him.
So I stumbled upon this movie with some descent level of prejudice.
And I still have some worries. Trailer shows some really dumb jokes, like "the girl you sold me has a large penis", or "Wise chick's brain makes small boobs".
Nevertheless, generally this movie seems to have some artistic ambitions, with unconventional ideas, art-house style (I don't know if you use this term).
Looks like it will be dealing with the problems of immigration and urbanization, overpopulation in big cities. Trailer features Georgians in Moscow and London, who are usually regarded as Mexicans in US. Also it concerns diseases of modern xUSSR society - overspending, living luxurious lifestyle, lack of aesthetics and taste.

But still, I'm not sure if it will make a good movie and won't slide down to ordinary penis-jokes.
