'Space Battleship Yamato' returns to space after 25 years!

Sing it with me now!

We're off to outer space
We're leaving Mother Earth
To save the Human race
Our StarBlazers!

Oh the memories. On this side of the Pacific it was called Starblazers. Back in its homeland it was called Space Battleship Yamato. It was also called 'Damn cool' by any kid who saw when they were growing up. And we can all rejoice, run up to complete strangers in the street, give them a great big hug and yell at them, 'Its back, its coming back. Space Battleship Yamato is coming back!' It has been 25 years since the last film screened in cinemas and it is making its valiant return thanks in whole to original Yamato producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki. He may be 73 years old but by golly if he still doesn't have the heart of a child.

To achieve that, Nishizaki has founded Yamato Studio, based in Nerima, Tokyo. Around 40 staff members have been assembled for the project, including general director Toshio Masuda and general animation director Tomonori Kogawa. Nishizaki had first declared his intent to make a "Yamato" film in 2004, but copyright disputes forced him to abandon the plan. This time, though, he says that he has been given the go-ahead.

The new movie is set in 2220, when the Earth is threatened by the expansion of a black hole. A plan is formed to transport 300 million people off the planet, but the fleet is attacked and the Yamato is forced to retaliate. Susumu Kodai (then 38) takes up the role of captain. In this story, he and his wife Yuki have their daughter Miyuki.

I hope that the new Yamato is good despite the lack of involvement by Leiji Matsumoto. I grew up watching Star Blazers...but I also have all 5 Space Battleship Yamato films and I am a fan of both incarnations of this anime classic. Hopefully a good director and writer will be able to adapt Yamato properly, if there is ever a live action US film.

Hokum, While the subtitled series Space Battleship Yamato is not likely to have a R1 DVD release...You can buy the 5 film set of Space Battleship Yamato films. All 5 films are fantastic. The first two films are based on the first 2 seasons, they are subtitled and about 3 hrs long. The second film ends with the destruction of the Yamato, but this is ignored in the other 3 films.

Yeah, I know about the movies but I was hoping for a release of the full series.

I'll add this to my 'list of impossible wishes', right under a subbed Galaxy Express 999 and Space Runaway Ideon.

That's fine, the mentally retarded anime companies in the US can keep right on releasing generic catgirl crap I don't want to buy instead of the things I actually want to see, and I'll keep right on not buying their generic catgirl crap. How're we looking for MINDGAME in R1? Yeah, I sure would like to buy that. Too bad nobody in America wants my money.
