I have sorely missed Mike Meyers shtick in the western comedy film market. And his absence has been so prolonged that maybe, just maybe, what looks like the same Mike Meyers comedy we saw in his Austin Powers series will seem like a breath of fresh air compared to the Apatows, the Ferrells and string of nonsensical parody movies that come out one month to the next. I guess the same goes for Meyers. If you like his comedy you will like his movie. Myself, I laughed a lot when I saw the trailer for The Love Guru at the cinema today.
The Love Guru has a couple things going for it. Mike Meyers, whom I love. The Toronto Mapleleafs, whom Mike Meyers loves despite not making the playoffs - again! Jessica Alba, whom the male population of the world loves. And Justin Timberlake in a speedo, who I guess someone out there loves.
Comedy unites and divides. Watch the trailer after the jump and sound off.

Just the trailer was infinitely excruciating -- I can't imagine what suffering through 90 minutes of it would be like, but the term "excessive torture" comes to mind. Sorry, but Myers hasn't really been anything but creepy since AXE MURDERER. It kind of angers me that utter shite like this probably cost 60 or 70 million dollars, and we get nothing but a drawn-out SNL skit. But that's just my opinion.
I think Mack totally hit the nail on the head.
Myers comedy either tickles or it can grate something awful. So, it's funny how many viewers fall in either camp.
Me? The first two Powers flicks had me giggling big time for their entire lengths, but not laughing out loud (I didn't think very much of the 3rd one at all). It's toilet humor and silly to the hilt, but I've never seen them pretending to be anything but.
This looks like more of the same. No more no less. Depending on your sense of humor I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing.
I thought the guru thing rang a bell - I remembered that LaChappelle photoshoot from back in 1999, and now the internet tells me that he's been developing this character since Austin Powers one... I wonder if it's going to stir up as much religious controversy as the photoshoot did?
To get in the spirit of a new Mike Myers movie, I'll just cut and past sections from earlier comments to express my thoughts about this trailer.
Infinitely excruciating. Excessive torture. This looks like more of the same utter shite Myers has been developing since AXE MURDERER. It’s funny how suffering through 90 minutes of it can grate something awful. Necessarily a bad thing.
Let's all say it together now.... BOX. OFFICE. FLOP.
This is what happens when stars get so big they can dictate what they want to do. I'm sorry, I like Myers and enjoyed Austin Powers, but this looks like rehash stuck together with an idea that probably came out of Myers' wet dream - "I want to play with the Toronto Maple Leafs one day". Add a dash of the babe du jour (Alba) and a few old jokes from previous films (the whole leg stretching routine looks a whole lot like Goldmember) and it all adds up to a disappointing outing to the cinema. Myers is starting to resemble Eddie Murphy. Same shtick repeated over and over.
I want to see the big (implied) indian dance number.
I always thought Mike Myers might've amounted to something more as an actor, but this looks like treading water in the worst sort of way. The original AUSTIN POWERS was just short of brilliant, and still makes me laugh - everything since then... ugh. Seems like he had a quality that's gone untapped - but maybe I was just imagining things.
At least Will Ferrell has the balls to stretch between dopey character comedies.
This has been scary looking, mega flop, look in horror from the side of the road since day 1. I'd love to be proven wrong, but Mack you just see something that I don't here.
Have to agree that Austin Powers 1 has some great bits that were milked ad naseum with the sequels.
Got a big soft spot for Axe Murder though. highly quotable film.
We all love Apatow, right guy?!
I think my fondness for this trailer is a nostalgia thing mostly. I like Myers' brand of comedy, be it a rehash or not. So say what you will about growth or not I like what he does and we have to admit that we haven't been oversaturated with his brand of comedy for a very long time.
Probably what makes Axe Murderer work than his other films is that he didn't write it. Is Meyers more likable when he is doing someone elses material?
