What the hell? 'The Cottage' gets sent to direct-to-video purgatory.

by Andrew Mack, February 20, 2008 8:22 AM

Oh woe is us who live on this side of the pond. According to the lads over at Bloody Disgusting Sony Screen Gems has officially dumped their film, The Cottage, to the boys over at Sony Home Entertainment. The UK horror-comedy will arrive on DVD April 29. I would love to know the reason why. We're only weeks away from the theatrical release in the UK so our Brit readers are going to have to let us know why they think Sony has gone this route. What a shame.

This is fine by me since it would have been a limited release that I wouldn't have been able to see, followed by an excrutiatingly long wait for the DVD. So yeah, I'm happy that I'll get to see it in 2 months instead of 6-8.

Maybe it isn't that good or maybe because Keira Knightly isn't in it and they speak with that weird accent and we all know Americans don't like foreign movies.

Perhaps because it's going to be ****.

Sony dumps a lot of higher-profile foreign genre films on DVD in North America. Not that surprising to me anymore. Would've been nice for it to score a theatrical release, but really, what does that mean anymore? Like crazybee said, that tends to gum up the works and put the brakes on home vid. With the cost of importing titles going up, I'm just happy being able to see it sooner.

Guys, you've made some excellent points. I take living in an A-List movie city for granted and I would love to see it on the big screen first. But I will agree that sooner in any format is better than no format at all.

I saw a trailer for this in front of There Will Be Blood this weekend, dvd or theatrical release, I won't be seeing it. Looks bad, really bad.
