One of the things that makes Japanese cult icon Takashi Miike the creative force that he is is that even while in the midst of pumping out big budget studio projects - such as his recent Sukiyaki Western Django, Crows 0 and Like A Dragon the man never forgets his low budget roots and often sneaks a tiny budgeted v-cinema project in on his spare time. Now, while 'Miike' and 'spare time' appearing in the same sentence may inspire giggles it does actually seem to happen and the latest low budget quicky the prolific film maker has cranked out in a short break is the straight to video detective shocker Tantei Monogatari. Private detective Kazama Raita (Nakayama)’s new neighbour is a dude with same name, Takashima Raita (Maki). From the moment he moves into the apartment next door, Takashima finds himself being tailed by the shady Kazama. One night, a female client of Kazama’s is found dead minus her liver, followed by a second and a third victim, one with their kidneys ripped out and the other sans lungs. The two Raitas attempt to uncover the truth, which has something to do with a tragic genius by the name of Aoyama Yuki…
