Alright. No sooner had we stumbled upon news of SPLICE the sci-fi hybrid being filmed in our own backyard than Canadian based Seville Pictures announces that they have picked up the Canadian rights. Seville calls it 'a unique sci-fi horror film. A hybrid of cinematic genres as far ranging as Rosemary's Baby, Frankenstein, Species and The Fly, with a little Alien and ET thrown in'. I'm not sure how something is unique when it refers to so many predecessors like these but the premise still sounds very cool and the conceptual stuff that we have been privy to in the meantime is awesome. That premise again is, SPLICE is the story of an ambitious and brilliant young couple who embark on a dangerous journey, setting aside ethics to selfishly pursue personal goals, when they splice human DNA into preexisting genetic-engineered experiments. The extreme power of modern science to turn nature inside out then unleashes itself into a creature that soon becomes a seductive and lethal monster.
Seville Pictures is proud to announce the acquisition of the Canadian rights to the $26 million Canadian science fiction horror film, SPLICE, directed by Vincenzo Natali (Cube), confirming its continued commitment to support Canadian quality features. Vincenzo Natali's project, his most ambitious to date, is being produced by Steve Hoban (Young People F***king, Ginger Snaps Trilogy, Black Christmas) of Copperheart Entertainment and has drawn the support of Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth), who will "present" the film and act as executive producer.Seville Co-President John Hamilton, "We look forward to working with Steve (Hoban) again, after a very positive experience on Ginger Snaps II and III, and to supporting Vincenzo's (Natali) vision for the first time as a company. We believe he is a unique talent in Canada".
SPLICE will start shooting here in Toronto on December 3rd. If we can find a way onto the set you'll be the first to know

Sounds a lot like Species...
