MY WINNIPEG wins Best Canadian Film at TIFF, gets Distribution in US, Canada, UK

by Kurt Halfyard, September 17, 2007 6:17 AM

Fresh off winning the Best Canadian Film award at this years TIFF, Guy Maddin's somnambulistically stylized, self-psychoanalytic and ultimately hilarious documentary on his home town, My Winnipeg was picked up by IFC for US distribution. In Canada and Britain My Winnipeg has distribution already set with Maximum Films and Soda Pictures respectively. Sure to be a hit on the festival circuit before (maybe) coming to an arthouse near you, or at least a solid DVD release. This kind of major award winning can only help Maddin's latest. My Winnipeg is also his most accessible film to date, and is a great entry point into his growing body of work.

Also, I managed to get a half hour of his time during the festival and will post a transcript of that interview later on in the week.

Yeah, me too.

Brand Upon the Brain is just a couple short weeks away from a release here in Minnepolis. I'm pretty excited to check it out.

Third that. I'm just hoping "My Winnipeg" is one VIFF's festival holdovers or that it comes back because I couldn't squeeze it into my schedule!
