When we first posted news about Casshern director Kaz Kiriya's upcoming sophomore feature there was some confusion about whether this shooting-in-Japan project, titled Goemon, was in fact the alien invasion film that he is preparing for Warner Brothers in the United States. There were some signs that said maybe yes - similar funding sources, a producer common to both - and some that said probably not - largely the titling and the fact that he is currently shooting in Japan. Well, we've just heard from screen writer Eric Heisserer - the man writing the alien invasion script for Kiriya - who has confirmed that these are separate and unrelated projects. Kiriya is currently shooting Goemon, which expects to wrap photography by winter, so expect some movement on the US project at some point after that.

I definitely want to hear more about this project which is supposedly a fantasy-adventure film revolving around the exploits of legendary bandit Ishikawa Goemon (1558-1594). While I love Kiriya's visually stunning SFX direction in "Casshern" as well as ex-wife Utada Hikaru's PVs (promotional videos) I'm still waiting to see what he can do at storytelling. He definitely has the potential to be another David Fincher or Ridley Scott.
