A Trailer For Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited!

by Todd Brown, July 25, 2007 12:42 AM

darjeeling-onesheet.jpgYou can count me among those somewhat disappointed by Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou a film that simply failed to find the mix of quirk and heart that Anderson had been claiming as uniquely his own with each of his previous three efforts. Sure, the quirk was there but the heart ... not so much. In it's place we had far too many one note characters being self consciously quirky and that just does not a great film make. An amusing film, sure, but given the escalation in quality from Bottle Rocket to Rushmore to The Royal Tennenbaums, The Life Aquatic was a significant disappointment for me.

This, however, looks like it could be a rebound, and in a pretty big way. Anderson's signature visual style and self aware dialog are in full effect but watching the interactions between his three leads I totally but them as real, actual people and that makes all the difference.

Two songs by The Kinks in the trailer. Sweet, I'm hoping to hear them in the film. Between this and Hot Fuzz, I'm glad movies are showing a little love for the Village Green Preservation Society...

Life Aquatic was the first film of his that works for me. This, however, looks god awful.

I'm always glad when a new Wes Anderson film arrives in theatres, but "The Life Aquatic" left me feeling underwhelmed. Then again, so did "The Royal Tenenbaums", and now I love that film.

All of Anderson's films require multiple viewings (for me personally) - to extract the greatness - if that makes any sense. Contrary to Todd, I felt the heart right out of the gate with The Life Aquatic. It was sort of like his 8 1/2.

The new one looks like it is going to require a little work, judging by the trailer though.
