French director Jan Kounen burst onto the international scene with the violent cop thriller Doberman, a film that had the director being hailed as some sort of new French wunderkind. Then he made Blueberry, a psychedelic western that is much loved by some around here but tanked miserably at the box office thanks to its odd blend of action, comedy and mescaline fueled mysticism. Kounen then turned his attention to documentary film making, further exploring his mystical side, but he's back into the fictional world and looks to be cozying up some to the mainstream with 99 Francs. Hey,a guy's got to eat, right? And if everybody's pandering to the mainstream looked like as much fun as this film maybe calling things mainstream wouldn't leave such a bad taste in our mouths.
The film is an adaptation of Frédéric Beigbeder's novel about an ad exec trying to get himself fired and it's all quirky, technicolored, glossy fun. We linked to an early trailer a while back but where that one was cut together from fairly raw footage without the benefit of post production and, thus, was dominantly about the feel of the characters, this one's the full blown affair.
