[Korean Film News] Pssst...How Much Cheddar Did The Mutant Tadpole Take In?

by Jon Pais, January 11, 2007 7:13 AM

Darcy Paquet breaks down the earnings of the most successful Korean film of all time in a post entitled "How much money did THE HOST make?"

Total admissions: 13.02 million tickets (about $90m)
Theatrical revenues for film company: 35.8 bn won ($38.5m), after subtracting movie theaters' take and taxes
International sales: 5.5 bn won ($5.9m)
TV rights: 3.1 bn won ($3.3m)
Video/DVD: 0.6 bn won ($650,000)
Product Tie-ins/Video on Demand: 0.5 bn won ($540,000)
Total revenues: 45.5 bn won ($48.9m)
Total budget, including print and advertising costs: 14.3 bn won ($15.4m)
Profits: 31.2 bn won ($33.5m), for a rate of return of 218%.

This will be shared between the production company and the investors, though Bong Joon-ho also gets a cut. (He claims it's not as big a cut as some people are saying it is)

P.S. Note how small the DVD revenues are. In the US, you often make more from the DVD than you do from the theatrical release.
