This Could Be A Rather Good Thing ...

by Todd Brown, December 5, 2006 11:59 PM

As DVD companies around the world continue to play the subtitle or no subtitle game we're constantly on the prowl for new sources of legitimate, English friendly DVD releases of the films we want to see.  We recently got word of a healthy number of films that received English subtitled releases in Singapore but at the time Singapore had not a single online store, a fact that left these things tantalizingly out of reach.  But not any more ...

Film news portal MovieXclusive have just launched Singapore's first online DVD store.  The stock at the moment is limited but the management there are VERY responsive to suggestions and questions and are more than willing to dig up pretty much anything you might want.  The big benefit here is most likely going to be an easy supply of films from south east Asia that either haven't received English friendly releases elsewhere or only in places where shipping expenses make them cost prohibative.  Basically, if you're looking for subtitled Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, Singaporean etc releases, this is looking like it may well be the best option with Thailand subtitling progressively fewer of their releases and Malaysian shops often charging as much as $30 a pop for shipping a single DVD.

Check it out here.

Nice. Tried them out. Shipping is a bit steep for a couple of titles, got Invisible waves and Forbidden Siren. But since they've just started I hope business will be good enough for them to get some great prices and titles as well.

I take it when they say region 3, they mean it?

unlike certain HK/Taiwan labels?.

(i know this isn't a big deal to most people, but in the video store

world it sure is.)

Any new source of subtitled releases is welcome! Just wondering what the standard of the English subtitles is like.

A little surprised to see Bimmer, Adams Apples and a few others there already.  Finally a legit, subbed version of Bimmer.  Surprised they don't list more singaporean movies.  I'm still trying to find the SE of "I Not Stupid" and there are a few others I've read good things about.  I picked up several different releases of other movies in the Singapore airport a few years back but none of them are listed here right now (One Leg Kicking, Home Run, Tears of the Black Tiger - Singapore release).
