The debut feature from acclaimed short film director Lee Jeong-Beom, Cruel Winter Blues is the story of a gangster who travels to a remote town to take vengeance for a friend's murder and is instead welcomed in by his quarry's mother. Slated to premiere at the Pusan Film Festival the film looks to be a quality piece of work: the cinematography is gorgeous and it unspools with a very light touch. Here's the festival synopsis:
"Jae-moon and Min-jae have been friends since juvenile reformatory, and entered into the gang world together. When they killed a person by mistake, Min-jae was murdered by Dae-shik. For vengeance, Jae-moon goes to Dae-shik`s hometown with Chi-kuk, the youngest among the gangs. While waiting for Dae-shik, Jae-mun meets Dae-shik`s mother and she welcomes him with warmness.
The typical gangster film surprisingly and uniquely ends up as a family drama. The film depicts devastated inner state of a gangster in the set of barren winter land. Director Lee shows his skills to emotional exchanges between strangers in his feature debut. Seol Kyung-goo never disappoints us with the superb performance, and Cho Han-sun proves himself as a prominent actor. Above all, excellent performance of actress Mun-hee LAH is the most eye-catching one.
