Following the confusion around the inaccurate posting of a DVD release from the latest by anime auteur Satoshi Kon the good people at Sony have just passed along some details on their planned release of the film in North America. The DVD release is currently not set but the film is tentatively slated to receive a theatrical release in March 2007, which places the North American release only three months behind the Japanese - not such a bad delay. Updates as we get them.

So sweet. I just started watching Kon's Paranoia Agent. Love that opening song. Very interested in this film.

PARANOIA AGENT is a bit of a mess. It could have been a masterpiece if they had made it as a 6 part OVA series instead of a 13 part cable TV series. The problem is that the first 4 episodes are awesome and the last 2 episodes are awesome. Everything in between is completely unnecessary filler crap that does nothing to advance the actual storyline. Sure, I liked the suicide club episode but it still had absolutely nothing to do with the real story. Not bad but a mess. Or maybe I should just call it an "interesting failure".

That song from Paranoia Agent was created by solo electronic artist Susumu Hirasawa. He also worked Satoshi's fine work Millenium Actress and Kentaro Miura's Berserk. He composes everything himself (and sings the vocals) with this strange looking electronic table device so shoddy that it looks to be made of a scrapped bicycle and a gurney. He supposidly studied at the same school Yoko Kanno had originated from but limits his talent by refuses to update his archaic sheetmetaltronics with buttons that make noises.

I really like his stuff, and he has great talent. Shame he doesn't try to obtain a live orchestra. His most recent work I heard was for Sammy's 2004 PS2 game, Berserk. He composed the opening theme, which is undoutebly the most polished sounding work of his.
