Another BBC Comedy show that was pretty obscure, hidden away, even though it had familiar cast members such as Dylan Moran, Charlotte Coleman, and Mark Heap, and even though it has one of the best know and most popular comedy writers behind it : Simon Nye. Was also the first time I remember seeing Peter Serafinowicz on TV, and the reason why I was so surprised to see his true nature revealed in later works : his character in this show, as Moran's brother-in-law was poles apart, very intimidating and difficult to deal with.

So, the show then is by Simon Nye, a man who flits between projects and has had some really dodgy stuff out there, but apart from the massive success of 'Men Behaving Badly' (BBC's biggest ratings winner for comedy during the 90's apparently), it's this show that I think best shows how well he crafts a plot, how substantial his ideas and understanding is. It's an adult comedy show, not something for a student fanbase, or for the younger set, but for those heading into adult life (even if reluctantly) and so it has a less obvious approach to its jokes and style of production. Very simple idea, perhaps a little too familiar, but trust me when I say that Simon Nye really does know how to come up with a whole load of fresh ideas and this show is the best example of the quality in his work.

No laughter track here, nothing seems to be shot on sets (all real locations it seems) and its shot on film instead of video. The setting is a small village, the premise is that Lisa Lyons (Nee Yardley, played by Coleman) returns with new husband Ian Lyons (Moran), and he sets up a small photographic studio whilst his wife works at the local Primary School. Ians' father-in-law leads the family's hatred of his daughters choice in husband, Dean Yardley (Serafinowicz( gives his a hard time in a very gregarious and boystrous fashion, and Derek Few (Mark Heap) lusts after his wife during their long working days together. Of course, Ian doesn't take to it all too well and his flagging career, his taste for alcohol and his difficulties with relatives make for an uncomfortable attempt to adjust to his new life.

Great stuff this show, and thankfully the set that is finally making it out has both series within it - 12 episodes (at 30 minutes each) across two discs. If you're a fan of great writing, sophisticated but easy to watch comedy, a fan of any of the actors then this couldn't come with any higher recommendation - better than 'Black Books'! or 'Green Wing'! . One of the best shows I saw during the 90's.

'How Do You Want Me?' is due on 2-Disc R2 UK DVD July 3rd 2006 : No Amazon listing yet.

Finally, my VHS copies were wearing thin, here's hoping there's some decent extras. I always thought of HDYWM as a comedy drama though. I first remember Peter S from the Alan Davies radio show but he really does give an amazing performance here, so menacing.

All I need now is a DVD of Hippies.

Hallelujah! I actually asked Peter S about this hitting DVD a while back and he knew nothing of any plans at the time ... this just made my day ... it's the best work I've seen Moran do, I think, and Heap is very good in an unusuakky restrained role, as well ...

Didn't MEN BEHAVING BADLY top some BBC poll about 10 years ago for best ever comedy? I know its a bit dated now, but I picked some old vhs of the first series with Harry Enfield in a second hand shop a few months ago and found it really easy-going nostalgic TV, and very funny at times. I don't know much about Simon Nye's other stuff though, so I'll be keen to check this out. Cheers for the heads up!

Be a little forewarned folks this show is extremly cringe inducing humor. It can be really brutal at some points. I watched th efirst season a while back thanks to certain sites.
