Saw it opening weekend, it's been out in Tokyo for the lesser part of a month and, despite its larger-than-usual (for a Miike) release it is in most respects not a hit. Although, it most certainly got the publicity. Most younger kids were stoked to see it and my screening had at least half of its audience in school still.

There is a sequel in the works, probably Twitch has known for a lot longer than me. :)

My personal take: I like Miike and I was pleased to see a film of his in theatres, for once, and to see him put together an entertaining story, if a little bit of a safe one. There are momentary flashes of hideous awfulness that would make the film a lot less appropriate for American kids, but it's generally regarded as a family film here.

I would not watch it again. But I liked it.

I would not recommend it to Miike fans who know and care about his Ichi sort of films, but not his Sabus.

The marketing campaign is in every respect more impressive and thrilling than the film. Which does not make it a bad film. It's just that all the cool photo shoots, books, posters plush hamsters playing cards and broken swords you can buy are more fun.

Liked it a hell of ton more than the last three or four films he's done.
