looked all right to me. I love the book and was skeptic when I read that they were going to make a movie out of it. I'll wait and see until I condemn it.
I've been nothing but bummed out by news of this movie ever since it was announced. The changes in the story, the compromises, the grafting of action movie beats onto a great story that doesn't need them...but after seeing this trailer I've changed my mind. There's still some dumb stuff here: Natalie Portman's iron-willed poker face, the screaming fascist speechifying, the overly-slick look, the dumb acid flashback tracers from thrown knives. But if this is the Warners-approved trailer, I've got to admire their stones. There's some stuff here that shouldn't be in a movie if a studio is looking to cover its ass: V wrapped in explosives like a suicide bomber, cops storming a building while a voice over talks about governments keeping people in a constant state of fear, London blowing up and catching on fire, interrogation scenes of women who have their hair shaved on camera. They don't seem to be scared of hitting terrorism hot buttons, and for that I'm really grateful. It's a ray of hope that the movie might live up to my expectations.
wow, I think I'm gonna go read my V for Vendetta trade now... never got around to it before. The film looks promising (as far as pseudo-intellectual action goes) and I'm really glad to see DC put another foot into the comic book movie world, especially with Vertigo — someone's gotta show Marvel who's boss. The adaptations of Moore's books have been totally unpredictable (turns out he's never seen either of the films), so there's still some hope for this one, I think.
i haven't read V yet, but whenever they start reprinting it i'll snag a copy of it. i loved watchmen and i'm pretty happy that it's not being made or at least halted right now. i hate the matrix, i'm not a huge fan of the wachowski's. i hated equilibrium; it was too fahrenheit 451 combined with THX for me. if i'd wanted to see those films i would've watched them instead of watching a rehash of similar ideas fused with others. alan moore is an amazing writer and live action just hasn't done justice to his work in the past, not really, so why should this one be any different? i know i'd be pissed if someone took my intillectual property and mucked with it to make it something else. in the event that watchmen does finally get made i hope and pray that terry gilliam has had some hand in the project; he's the only one i'd trust with it. shouldn't the creator of a work of fiction be involved with every aspect of it? look at what happened to Sin City. frank miller was involved in the live action creation of that film and look how true it was to the book. were the wachowskis afraid to get moore involved? oh well, since i have no knowledge of V (seeing as how i haven't read it) i'll go into the movie unbiased. mark my words though, Watchmen is too powerful of a story and if that gets mucked up there will be a LOT of people pissed off.
i wasnt that impressed. trailers nicely put together but contains far too much / too quickly edited footage... i think potential major disappointment...
Moore has basically gone on record as saying that he's disowned any and all film renditions of his works unless they're done exactly like the comics. Personally, I think that's a little unrealistic. There has to be some measure of adaptation and modification when you move between media.
For example, the recent Hitchhiker's movie. One of the things that makes the novels so great is Adams' writing style - the way he constructs his sentences and plays with words. Often, what's funny in the books isn't what he wrote, but how he wrote it. And there's no way you can translate that particular effect to the big screen. You have to change the work to coincide with the strengths of the media (obviously without compromising the central integrity of the original work).
So, I think Moore's expectations, while admirable and certainly understandable, are a bit unreasonable. So it doesn't bother me if elements of the story are changed, but I have a feeling that this movie might have changed the elements a bit too much in favor of Matrix-y effects and hyperactive editing.
Now is everyone referring to Equilibrium because of the look and sense of the trailer or are they like me and sure that the music is either the exact music from Equilibrium's score or very very similar? IMHO Equilibrium rules like lords man.
i don't think matrix was a fluke for the watchowski brothers... 'bound' was excellent.. i just think they lost touch with what made the first matrix fun to watch.

I guess I'm in the minority in thinking that THE MATRIX: RELOADED was better than the original...The programming metaphors, the two or three huge action sequences, the architect, the merovingian....No complaints...Wasn't a big fan of the third film, because it wasted all of Reloaded's potential set-ups...thus grounding the momentum...however I did enjoy the last 15 minutes of so of Revolutions, the christ-ending and open vague finale..
Oh, and I'm also looking forard to "V" (just to be a bit on thread..)

They read comics every week, they're typical comic shop geeks, and have their own comic publishing thing going on at http://www.burlymanentertainment.com/ with titles done by geof darrow and steve skroce, and one of the titles is written by them.

My favourite comic of all-time - at least it looks like all the story elements are still in place, even if the knife-throwing looks a bit 'tricksy'...
