The page on the website of Albatros K.K. (Arubatorosu K.K.) for the omnibus horror movie Ranpo jigoku has just been updated; new stills have been added (one here, and a set of three there), and it has been revealed that the movie will open at the Cine Saison Shibuya this autumn.

As was previously reported here on Twitch, Ranpo jigoku is comprised of four stories, all of which are based on short stories by Tarô Hirai (1894-1965) - better known by the pen name "Edogawa Ranpo". The four stories are...

"Kasei no unga": directed by Suguru Takeuchi; screenplay by Suguru Takeuchi; starring Tadanobu Asano, Kaiji Moriyama, and shan.

"Kagami jigoku": directed by Akio Jissôji; screenplay by Akio Satsukawa; starring Hiroki Narimiya, Tadanobu Asano, Mikako Ichikawa, Tomoya Nakamura, and Minori Terada.

"Imomushi": directed by Hisayasu Satô; screenplay by Shirô Yumeno; starring Ryûhei Matsuda, Yukiko Okamoto, Hanae Kan, Tadanobu Asano, and Nao Ômori.

"Mushi": directed by Atsushi Kaneko; screenplay by Atsushi Kaneko; starring Tadanobu Asano, Tamaki Ogawa, and Hiromasa Taguchi.

Very cool stills, not at all what I was expecting from this ... some of those hyper-real color schemes remind me a lot of Tears of the Black Tiger ... should be fun with that cast ...

Just caught an industry screening of this today, and my overall impression is this is the most exciting Japanese horror release in years. Every part stands out pefectly. Hisayasu Sato is the most powerful, but the final one by Atsusyi Kaenko - I've never seen anthing like it.
So far, the best Japanese movie of the year....

Jasper,

Is this what you caught at Imagica? Looks sweet.

So, do you take back what you said about omnibus films, then? ;)

Yep, this was the Imagica screening, and nope, no subs, but you dont really need them its so visual, especially if you've already read the original stories, which are included in the Japanese Tales of Mystery and Imagination anthology published by Tuttle.

Thx Jasper.
Wanted to get some books by Rampo anyway.
Have been trying to track down a screener for that baby in the last weeks. Things are looking good. But not for a subtitled version.
