Yet Another Asian Horror Remake: New Regency Buying Rights to Shutter

Sigh. The deal's not done yet, but Arnon Milchan and New Regency are expected to sign off on a deal giving them remake rights to the excellent Thai ghost story Shutter by the end of Cannes. Of the crop of stuff in the works this one should translate well, but I'm getting tired of this whole cherry-picking trend ...

On a possible upside, though, Milchan's deal will NOT include the distribution rights to the original film, which the Thai production house expects to sell seperately to a specialty distributor, also by the end of Cannes. If nothing else this should ensure that we don't end up with a situation like Miramax's burying of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Kairo. Best case is that the remake offers added exposure to the original and opens up a broader audience for the film's very talented directors ...

"the remake offers added exposure to the original and opens up a broader audience for the film's very talented directors ..." very wise thing to keep in mind rather than damn the whole remake trend. granted, the chance of a remake being at least equal to an original is not high, but more folks will see the original as a result.
