It seems that Sin City, which is in competition for the Palm D'Or at Cannes, was received with grumblings from various folks due to the level of violence and sexism depicted in the film. Hmmm, perhaps some of the arthouse crowd are missing the point here as Sin City is genre distilled down to its finest essence.
The good news is that Sin City 2 will be based on the 2nd novel in Frank Millers series, "A Dame to Kill For":
"We'd always thought 'Dame to Kill For' was the story (for the sequel)," Rodriguez said. "It has all the characters; Mickey's in it, Clive is in it, so it would be great to bring everybody back."
I've not read this novel, and am curious (as it doesn't seem radically thicker than any of the three which comprised the first film) how they will pull a 90 minute movie off out of just one story, but there you have it.

A Dame to Kill For is a truly great story and in the real spirit of Sin City. I sincerly hope this will make for a more successful try. I think they tried to make too much out of the first film, cramming it up with three stories. The film did not make use of the most important feature art (and especially comics) can do so well - to take a break, slow down, let the impressions sink in. And really in a film so bleak we should expect more of the actors (whom of only Rourke make an impression). No, Sin City could have been great, instead it is suffering from several pacerelated troubles and a horrible and humorless direction.
I thought that Rourke's character died in the first one. Am I wrong?
chronologically, 'a dame to kill for' occurs before the marv story in the film.
in fact, since the dwight character has his old face in 'dame,' i wonder if rodriguez will have clive owen wearing facial prosthetics a la rourke? also, i seem to remember reading somewhere that frank miller said he was going to write new stories to have enough material for any sin city film sequels...
While The film didn't do "to the moon" box-office...Expect the DVD sales of this picture to assure at least a couple sequels...I'm looking forward to them perfecting the first go around...hopefully, this will be a series which gets better with each additional sequel.
