David Lynch Doing a Personal Re-Edit of Dune? Zowie ...

Okay, I've been open in the past about my dislike for Lynch's Dune - the weakest of his films, in my opinion - but if this is true, I'm so there. So very, very there.

"fantastic news today regarding the recently delayed Dune extended edition dvd--it appears that the release date was pushed back b/c lynch had a last minute change-of-heart and decided to revisit the film (which he had previously claimed he was done w/ forever). this means that we will finally get to watch a lynch-approved director's cut of Dune, which is infinitely better than the previously-announced crappy alan smithee tv edit. considering that lynch should have some 5+ hours of footage to work with during the re-edit process, hopefully this new version will add a significant amount of lynch-y goodness and flesh out the scope of the cool-yet-flawed theatrical version. this was totally one of those things, along with fincher revisiting Alien 3, that i thought would never ever happen. very happy about this...

Big thanks to Jung for the note ...

now i we can just get lynch to go back to his previous works and give us (the AMERICAN veiwers) the extra content and extended versions we deserve.

FWWM: super extended director's collector edition (that we were screwed out of)

lost highway (on dvd? where? japan? c'mon.)

mullholand drive (france has a shit load of extras on their dvd. why didn't we get that stuff?)

and last but definitely not least:

twin fucking peaks. artisan screwed us. spelling screwed us. maybe paramount won't screw us but who knows. maybe they will. i've been living on my season one dvd and vhs box for too long now. i go through twin peaks at least once a year (sometimes twice). i need a complete version that's gonna take the abuse.

There are both US and UK DVD versions of Lost Highway. Am I missing something? Are they mangled in horrible ways?

awsome new!! loved this movie!

Lost Highway hasn't been released in the US, actually .. . there's a Candian R1 release that's pretty horrible. Pan and scan.

The Twin Peaks S2 debacle is all about Paramount, actually, not Artisan ... there was a weird clause in the contract that said Artisan had release rights but Paramount wasn't obligated to provide the materials for the remaster. Once they saw how well S1 did they opted to sit on the S2 materials and wait out the contract so that they could do it themselves ... it should be out in October. They're doing the video remastering now ...

so, i guess it's possible that this dune news was only a rumor and not actual fact. both dugpa.com and lynchnet.com are reporting that somebody asked david lynch himself in a chatroom about his reported involvement in the dune extended dvd, and he denied it. i suppose now it's just "wait and see."

Funny enough, I significantly prefer the Alan Smithee TV cut to the under 2h theatrical cut.

I anxiously await a 5h david lynch approved version, but damn, I would have bought the current TV version with a pristine transer, widescreen 16x9 and 5.1 sound and been pretty fricken happy.

According to a friend of mine, who's a regular at DavidLynch.com, this is bunk. According to Lynch, Universal wants to do a reissue, and is spreading rumors that he's involved in the hopes of selling more discs. He ain't---he wants to forget the movie ever existed.

Which is very sad. But there it is.
