Just a reminder that Zhang Yimou's House of Flying Daggers has now opened across the continent. Go, see, now. It's an amazing film that really needs to be seen on the big screen ... check my review from the Toronto Film Festival here.

It still isn't a wide release, though, so I can't go to the local theatre to see it. I'd have to go to Chicago. Oh yeah, there's a new HK DVD coming out for the movie next week. It'd be a shame if it had the same transfer, but my fingers are crossed that they rectified the problems. It's a 2 disc set with a bunch of extras, and some places are reporting it as having DTS-ES and Dolby Digital EX sound, as opposed to the other HK disc, which was only in DTS and DD. Chances are it'll sport the same shitty transfer, but I'll know for sure the week following Xmas. The disc hits HK stores on December 23rd.

i agree, that this is a great film.
why hasn't it been giving a wide release in the states?? Hero got one and did pretty well? (it was 2 years later but)

It'll go wide eventually ... they're doing a gradual roll-out, following the same basic pattern they did with Crouching Tiger. Hit a couple markets early so it qualifies for the major awards, let the press and buzz build a little then hit the major cities on just a few screens each, let the buzz build more and then go wide.

As a follow-up...if this new DVD has the same transfer, EDKO should be ashamed of themselves. It would be an unforgivable offense, punishable by a lot of bitching, is they released a new DVD a month later with the same fucked transfer.

For shame, EDKO!

Oooh ... hadn't seen that there was a collector's edition coming ... I'm betting it'll have the same transfer, though. This is so tight on the heels of the last Edko release that I don't think they've had time to do another one ...

Personally I'm holding out for a Korean release on par with the three disc Hero set they did over there ...
