Shinya Tsukamoto is ready for his extreme close-up, Mr. deMille!

by Ard Vijn, October 22, 2009 5:51 PM

We all know and love Shinya Tsukamoto for being one of the most exciting directors working today. It helps that he isn't afraid to create genre movies, that he frequently manages to transcend those genres and that he has a wicked sense of humor.

But Tsukamoto-San is also a very accomplished actor, able to play both nice and creepy roles with seemingly no effort whatsoever. His very recognizable face can be admired in many a great film, whether he is the director or not.

So once again I'm going to use a turn in the Twitch-O-Meter to do a gallery of 5 close-ups of one of my favorite thespians. Guess which 5 movies they're from.
No competition, no prizes, just for fun, try to see how far you get without using IMDB.
And I'll post the answers on Tuesday (earlier if someone has all 5 of them right).

Good luck!

Haha!

Finally I posted one that is actually difficult! Normally these things get guessed within an hour or two...

Damn! I've seen just about everything he's in but these have me stumped. I'm reasonably certain there are Nightmare Detective and Marebito sightings in there but the others have me totally beat. Particularly by the mohawk one ...

1, Nightmare Detective
2, Haze
3, Ichi The Killer
4, Marebito
5, no idea... not Tetsuo 2 Bodyhammer is it?

I caught Nightmare Detective, Haze, and Marebito (a tragically underrated film). I'm not sure that third one is Ichi, I think he had his hair parted differently in that film, and he looks a little older. I'm not sure about that last one either. I'm relatively sure it's in something I have seen, but the blueish tint leads me toward A Snake of June, one which I own but haven't gotten around to watching yet. Then again, he's used that in numerous other films (Tokyo Fist comes to mind), so I'm not sure.

Well done ghevans, all of them right in one go!
Me and my big mouth...

The last one (with the mohawk and the harelip) is indeed "Tetsuo 2: Bodyhammer".
Shinya Tsukamoto appears several times in that film, but for his final fight he shaves his head.

That explains it, haven't seen Tetsuo 2 either. What scene is that from Ichi?

Aren't you supposed to be working on your next movie, Evans? Go make Iko punch someone.

This was easily the toughest "De Mille" ever. Particularly because Tsukaomoto looks almost the same in all of his films.

The only giveaway one was Nightmare Detective.

I knew Ichi would be in there (non Tskamoto directed effort would be a given) but still I could only hazard guesses.

Well Done.

Metrogenic,
The scene from Ichi is when Paulyn Sun asks Tsukamoto whether or not he ever hypnotized her, on which he answers (wearing this very trustworthy face) "I wouldn't dare!"...

For those curious, I'm told Iko hit several people yesterday.

Eek... the power of Zod's commands...

For those who feel utterly lost on what Todd is talking about (the Iko thing): the quiz was won this time by a celebrity!
Reader "ghevans" turned out to be none other than Gareth Evans, the director of Indonesian fight flick extraordinaire "Merantau".

So, Gareth, work yourself into 5 of your films and see what happens!

Thanks, Ard! Something about that pic just didn't click, which probably means it's about time to watch Ichi again.
